1870F has built-in the same fishfinder module as FCV-587. FCV-587 is the improved version of FCV-585 which will be available in US towards the end of the year.

I can see two disadvantages when compared with FCV-585, screen size/format and control interface. FCV-585 has a 8,4" rectangular 640x480 screen oriented vertically. 1870F has the same resolution, but only a 7" screen and it's oriented horizontally. When using it as plotter/sounder with splitted screen the windows will be quite small. FCV-585 has rotary buttons for gain control and for selecting what to display, for 1870F this will have to be done from menus.

I have briefly had a look at 1670F or 1870F at a boat show, don't remember which model, and it looked good I must say except for the screen height.

I have FCV-627 which is the improved version of FCV-620, and I'm very happy with it. Upgraded from FCV-620.

The matching box is not needed for using a "normal" Airmar 1 kW transducer.

If you have the budget and space I think you will be more happy with two separate units. FCV-627 as fishfinder and 1670 as plotter would be a good combination.

I have also seen and played with the GP1870F at a boat show and I really liked it. Remember, it's a combination plotter/sounder so the screen will be horizontal as with all combination units by all manufacturers. You really cannot compare (in any fairness) the controls of a multifunction unit with that of a stand alone unit like the FCV627 or 587. A combination unit is a compromise for both dash space and budget so controls are cleverly lay out to give the user best access to most commonly used features. With the GP1870F Furuno has a unit that easily fits into both budget and space yet still with the great features AND better still performance that you will get in individual sand alone Furuno equipment. If dash space ad budget is not an issue then I agre with abbor, just buy one of each

The "box" is a diplexer box (MB1100) which is required when connecting two seperate transducers (a 50khz and a 200khz). If you intend to use the "standard" transom mount 1kW or 600W (with 10 pin plug) transducer then you do not need the box.

It's possible to make a combo unit which is as user friendly as FCV-620/585, I have also Simrad NSS and the combination of the large rotary controller and touch gives a user interface for the sounder part which is at least as good as for the Furuno units. As fishfinder only units the Furuno's are in a class by themselves when it comes to user interface.

Thank you very much Gentlemen. Any comparisons to other similar sized MFD like NSS7 or E7D or 740S. I have not seen it marketed anywhere in US yet. Any street prices available?
