I would look at using a Simrad AP24 with a octopus helm drive

THat Raymarine unit will work well but it has a limitation of 4400 lbs loaded boat weight. If you fit in there, it is a good choice. Otherwise the Raymarine X-10 would be the ticket. I have used their APs for 10years and they are excellent. The every earkliest ones were a bit cranky but the ones from the lsat 7 years handle my heavy 34' Downeast boat verywell.

Stern drive boats are difficult for rudder feedback installations. The Garmin pilot (formerly the TR-1) was the first rudderless autopilot. The 12 series Garmin pilot is for sailboat. Sailboats do have hydraulic linear drives.
Is your boat CABLE steering or hydraulic. If hydraulic I'de recommend Garmin. I cable we'd have to see clearance behind helm for proper A/P bolt-on drive system.

No the GHP 12 isn't a sailboat pilot anymore. For more than a year you can use it for powerboats too. You can connect it to almost any drive drive out there.... pretty straight forward.
the octopus drive has a integrated feedback so thats easy too.
If you want Garmin you can use the GHP10+Pump for hydraulic steering. For any other drive (oem pump, linear drive, actuator, solenoid etc) use the GHP 12 with a resistiv feedback..... You need to order the drive and feedback cable though....

I have the spx-5R on my tilt steering and it works fine. Here is a pic...btw my boat exceeds the specs on the SPX-5R and I still think it is the best buy I have made for the boat yet!

I would love to see this setup. I am thinking about doing this exact installation on my 22.5 bayliner express cruiser with Merc I/O. I am between this and a Raymarine Sportpilot. Is one or the other better for trolling at speeds as low as 1.5mph?
