Garmin GPS paired (NMEA) to a Standard Horizon VHF
Trying to find someone who has successfully connected a Garmin GPS Chart Plotter to a Standard Horizon VHF with advanced DSC capabilities.
The SH web site says: "STANDARD HORIZON has pioneered the capability to poll (request and send) the GPS location of another vessel and show the position of that vessel on the VHF's display. Standard Horizon has taken this feature one step further, if any Standard Horizon GPS is connected to the QUEST, the polled position of the vessel is shown on the display of the GPS chart plotter making it easy to
navigate to the location of the polled vessel. This is a great feature for anyone wanting to know the position of anther vessel for example you buddy that is catching fish, or finding the location of a person you are cruising with. "
And the Garmin site for the 172C says: "Sends, receives, and displays positioning data with DSC-equipped VHF radios"
But as you can see, the SH web states you can do this when a SH VHF is connected to a SH GPS.
Has anyone hooked the Garmin and SH units together (NMEA) and had the Garmin "display positioning data" of the other boat?
I can't find an answer anywhere but someone here must have done this.

Yes, it is a bare wire but...
1. I don't yet own the 172C and will only purchase if it can do this
2. you need another VHF to call you in order to test it out. Kind of hard to do in the dead of winter
RE: Garmin GPS paired (NMEA) to a Standard Horizon VHF
The Garmin should be able to display the location of a polled radio. It is not a capability that is unique to Standard Horizon equipment. I believe that all of the current crop of plotters by Garmin that have the latest software in them have the polling ability - to the extent that anyone does.
Remember, the transmitting radio in one of these setups has to be set up to allow polling. I know mine AREN'T, how are yours set up?

Thom
The Quest+ specifically states it is set up for polling. Everyone I have had a conversation with says it should work but I can't find someone who has actually done it.

As Thom states the newer Garmins, and the 172 you have question, will do it. But the other radio must be poiled on channel # 70 for the system to work.Appearantly Standard has a sentence in their software package where it will work on all channels on their VHF's no just # 70 as the standards were writen for.

Are you aware of anyone who has been able to get the Garmin to poll position when connected to a SH VHF?
No,i don't,my circle not enough have a DSC radio online(not wired up yet) .But it will work!!!!By design it will work. You need to get the following book; A Boaters Guide to VHF and GMDSS by Sue Fletcher ISBN#0-07-138802-8
RE: Garmin GPS paired (NMEA) to a Standard Horizon VHF
Thanks for the link. I am somewhat familiar with how DSC works but my main concern is does SH use a proprietary NMEA sentence which only a SH GPS can receive? I know the sentence is standard protocol for what the GPS sends to the VHF...
RE: Garmin GPS paired (NMEA) to a Standard Horizon VHF
I have a Garmin 2006C connected to a SH GX1270S INTERPID+. DSC function works great. My son has a Garmin 182C connected to his SH GX1270S on his boat, We poll each other when we are out in Barnegat Bay. My radio automatically goes to channel 70 when I receive his call and then I request his position via my radio (menu) and my GPS indicates his ships icon on my screen at his lat/lon postion. Also setup your Garmin via the DSC tab. And just connect the NMEA signal as instructed in the manuals. We have a lot of fun with it.

I believe the needed sentences for polling are: RMC, GGA, GNS, and GLL. It is the GNS that is a new one to me so I guess its the one you're talking about.
