Default Furuno DGPS-36 antenna?

Trying to think way ahead to antenna placement on the 1/2 tower of the 31 Bert I was wondering about the dgps 36 I have. It has a 3-4' whip that screws into the gps antenna housing. Is this whip absolutely necessary? I will more than likely have the 2 raymarine c120's each with their own gps antenna. I was thinking about keeping the furuno dgps 36, remove the whip and mount it inside the headliner of the interior cabin but up high right close to the fiberglass. I have heard of a lot of guys who mount their gps antenna's this way so they are hidden. Or, is there a different antenna available for the furuno??

I'm just worried that removing the 4' whip wil laffect the GPS in some way. I know when we bought it about 5 seasons ago there whip antenna was an extra $$ option, but now I can;t remember why.

The whip is the differential antenna.

If you have two other gps's then what is the need for it? You should sell on ebay while its still worth something.

My GP-1850D has a differential antenna without the whip. I guess they made more than one style. I'd contact Furuno and see what the advantage of the whip is over the "standard" DGPS antenna.

Just thought 3 GPS would be better. There is no real reason as I am sure the 2 c120's with separate antennas will do just fine.

Maybe ebay is calling the furuno gps and a icom vhf I have....I'll think about it.

Craven said it all. The whip is for the differential signal. Take it off and you have a straight GPS that tells you it is not receiving it's differential info.

What kind of ICOM?
