What exactly does the second port (smaller one, not power/data cord connection)on the back of the 2006C connect? Is it a second data port or for some mysterious future use (which the manual seems to suggest).

Its for the Black Box depth finder (GDS-20) which is now available. If you do an upgrade to your software (Version 4.1 or .2 I think its up to) it will include Sonar on the Menu tab and you can turn it on in Simulate to see what it would look like if you invested in one.

I'm sorry, what Ken told you is absolutly right and what I told you is dead wrong. The new black box fish finder connects via two bare wires to the Power/Data cord that plugs into the larger of the two pinned-recepticles on the back of your machine. The second, and smaller, recepticle is for future use. For whatever its worth my 2006 came with a cable to use with that port. Its still up in the box waiting for its day to come.
Once again, my appology for giving you misinformation and thanks to Ken for noticing it and stepping in with the correct answer.

I just recieved my ac power pack / data cable from Garmin. The software upgrade was extreamly easy to do. My Lowrance was a real pain in the butt to do.. This plugs into the large connector. Makes it nice to sit back and enter information as well.
Thom, I believe the new software upgrade allows you to display depth on the 2006. Older software did not recognize NMA depth word. It did recognize Water Temp. I tried to send both Water Temp and Depth from my old LMS 350 to the 2006 and Water Temp came through fine, but no depth. I downloaded the new upgrade from Garmin but have not installed same, but I believe that is the story.
Nope, that ain't it. I've been able to display depth on my 2006, getting the NMEA data from a Furuno 600L ever since the first day it was hooked up last winter. I think that was back with software version 3.01 or so, now its up to 4.02 if I remember correctly (just did the update last friday myself).
Anyway, this one really stumps me. I never had any problem at all receiving depth information and displaying it on my Garmin, and on my Raytheon radar too for that matter, but a lot of guys can't get it to work. I have absolutly no idea why it won't work for them. Oh, and I have a couple of waypoints that I saved with the 2006 that include depth in the saved data as well. And now get this, not only is my Furuno 600L providing depth data to my 2006 but its also providing it to my Garmin GPSMap-76. Yep, not only can the 76 display depth on the screen but there are waypoints I have saved in the 76 while out on the water and they too were able to capture the depth information too. This is also with earlier versions of the software (don't recall the version numbers).
Anyway, its a mystery to me why I can and other's can't get the depth information to transmit. Whoops, almost forgot, my 76 is also providing navigation data to the fish finder, and it shows up just fine too. Go figure

Thom, the latest upgrade I have is 3.01 to 3.02. I downloaded it on 04/11/02. I don't know whether that is the latest, but the first item in the Garmin Change History says "Added support for handling input of NMEA DBT depth sentence". I suspect that "support" means they will acknowledge some of the older MMEA 0183 sentence structures. My LMS 350 is truly ancient, whereas your Furuno has to be more recent. I expect to dump the 350 now that Garmin has released their depth sounder module for the 2006.
Salt,
garmin tech svc told me the NMEA 2000 is for "future use" meaning when NMEA 2000 comes into existence--which I think is some time away, like maybe a yr or 2. (in other words it has nothing to do w/ the new GSD 20 black box)
that's what I was told....
