Default Need a Fishfinder education

I'm thinking of getting a fishfinder but am ignorant at this point of what is involved.
There is the display screen but what is the transducer? how is it installed? does transom mount make a difference? What is the signifcance of the different kHz figures?
Is pricing based on the screen dispalay and then a transducer is seperate?
Iknow...Iknow....lots of questions... any answers are appreciated or even direction to a site that explains all this.

Click > HERE < for a tutorial from Lowrance. At the bottom of the link, you can click on "next" for a few pages of continuation.

You can go to the Garmin and Lowrance web sites and find info. The BoatUS and West Marine catalogs have a lot of info on selecting electronics. You need to go to these places and then come back with specifics. You can also do a search on the THT site.

Also, if you go to the Lowrance website you can actually download the software that runs on there units and run it in simulation mode on your PC. If you buy a Lowrance unit its a great way to play with it and learn all the functions. If you haven't bought yet, it would be a good way to get familiar with fishfinders in general so that you are more educated when you go shopping.
