I would like to feed my GPS info to my Furuno unit. Does anyone know what type of cable I need to make this connection? I think I need a Furuno specific plug on one end of the cable to attach to the depth finder but I am not certain.
just out of curiosity...
why would you want to feed nmea data into this fishfinder?
Will the 582 do anything other than display information that you already have visible on your gps?
I cannot speak for the Man but it will enable you to see your current location on the fishFinder screen with out having to look elsewhere !!!
Ideal for recreational or commercial fishing, the Furuno FCV582L interfaces with other NMEA 0183 data compatible nav equipment and chart plotters
for easy system integration. A variety of display modes are available at the touch of a "soft key" button to provide detailed information and images.
Since you appear to be a dealer, how much do you think a Furunon 000-117-603 data cable is going to set back some poor boater who thinks he needs "easy system integration"?
(It appears to me that "easy system integration" means that you can read your lat/long displayed on your fishfinder in case you're too confused by a day of fishing to find your position on your gps.)
Actually cabo216, the nav option screen on the 582 can present information on one screen that many GPS's cannot. Besides, what wrong with people doing things out of want as opposed to need. Unless you are a commercial fisherman or make your living from your boat you don't NEED your boat!!!!!!!!!!!

Cabo216, what you'r talking about is not full integration or as some think of it as networking. The FCV-582L will display NMEA data from any GPS outputting NMEA0183. So if you have a handheld GPS with a small screen then you're in luck to be able to easily interface the GPS to the FCV-582L and use the NAV display. If one already has a beauty of a GPS plotter that displays all you need then you're probably wasting your time, money and effort interfacing the two units. However for those that don't well then it's all good news. So lets hope you're not too confused and can see all your NAV information on your plotter.
cabo,
The advantage to the NEMA connection is a larger info display and arrival accuracy not displayed on the gps. When you are "looking" for that hot spot, the dual nav and ff data is invaluable. Other than that, it's just another $30 gizmo.

You all presume that it is the fish finder he wants to look at.* With the cable the information passes the other way too. I personally find it very convienient to have water temperature and depth displayed on my chartplotter's screen.* That's because I have the plotter right in front of me as I run the boat.* Our fish finder is set to the side, in the open, so anyone on the boat can watch it, but not directly in front of the driver.* I like to know the depth when I'm driving.* Don't you?
Well thanx to all of you for providing the information. If you look back at my original post, I was only trying to understand the benefit of interfacing the 582 with other electronics. At the time I was wondering if this was something I should consider doing. After reading the posts above, it sounds as though- at most- you can get some redundant display of information. It doesn't appear though that any new functionality will be achieved.
Since I have to be budget-conscious when I buy things for my boat, I try purchase equipment and do installations that allow me to do something I couldn't do before. I have an excellent gps chartplotter and a fishfinder that are both easily visible from the helm. When everything is working, I know where I am, I know how deep the water is, and I know the water temperature. In my case interfacing the the nmea output from the chartplotter with my fishfinder would not provide me with any new capability and indeed, would create another electrical connection with a potential for failure sometime down the road.
I like to rely on practical information I get on this website. You guys often have great suggestions and good insight into practical workarounds. Most of the time you guys are able to cut through the manufacturer's advertising bs in order to help us all make good decisions about purchases and installation. However, when the poster merely regugitates company advertising as fact, then the value of the thread is undermined.
Here is a quote from the Furuno website:

Since when does the word BUDGET-CONSCIOUS and Boat belong in the same sentance??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No that's a heck of a statement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does your insturments not always work??? !!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly what was unpratical to my answer to the Mans question !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cut and pasted that info so may be YOU could understand why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does it sound familiar?
Why dont you do a little reading and see if you can find where my style of writing imunalates what I cut and pasted
I only cut and pasted that tid bit of info for the Data challenged person on the other side of this Screen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yes I love these babies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
Thanks for all the responses, sorry for being out of touch.
As someone has already mention, I would like both the
GPS info on the depth finder and the depth info on my GPS. I can see situations where each of these could be helpful. The main reason I want this option is for long runs along the coast or to the bahamas when it would be nice to use every inch of my GPS screen for my map. This screen is currently split between my map and my speed and location numbers. If the depth finder could show the speed and location info I could display a larger map on my GPS. Unfortunately I do not have a 10 inch GPS screen so a $30 cable that could increase the amount of map I see without losing speed and location data makes a lot of sense to me. Much cheaper than upgrading my GPS.
JTBURF, if you are in the business and sell this cable please email me your details (schweidee@yahoo.com) and maybe we can do some business.
I have the 582 connected to my Furuno GP-1850 WD. The cable was a minor cost item
in my opinion. Just cut your Starbucks coffee intake down for a month and you own the cable.
Isn't anyone getting concerned about all this interfacing stuff? We just don't know what we might be creating, you know. Didn't anyone see "The Matrix"? I'm thinking I need to put a big red "KILL" button on my bridge that will power down the Navnet and all the associated electronics, just in case they decide to take over. I can see it now... "resistance is futile.....", big square cube-shaped boats, all that!!!!!!
That is a concern the voices haven't mentioned. The next time they offer guidance I'll ask them about the machines. I hope they don't give the usual, "Destroy Them All", answer. It can be so difficult to obey .... t:
