Default NMEA wiring question

Hey guys,

I have to interface all my new electronics on the new boat. I've done installs before but never any NMEA stuff. I understand the + and - wiring, but on my Icom M502 they have an RCA jack on the back for the NMEA connection. Is it better to just clip the RCA off and deal with the two wires coming out or should I rig up an RCA connector of my own to work with the Icom? Seems that getting rid of the RCA and going with a soldered wire to wire connection would be easier and more reliable. What have you guys done?

Good Luck,

Capt. Terry Nugent

I just put on an RCA jack. It works fine so far (one season). I'm not going to perform surgery on a waterproof enclosure unless there is a problem.......

Yeah, just go to Sh_t shack and buy an RCA connector to wire on for about $2.

I cut my RCA connector off one of my radios and was sorry I did. Icom has a VERY small positive wire in there, it was VERY difficult to work with. Your better off keeping the RCA connector.

Thanks guys,

Birdman, thats exactly the kind of info I needed. I wanted to learn from others mistakes. I'll get a connector at the "shack".

Good Luck,

buy a gold connector at RS....and spray it well with your favorite no corrode spray...and sealing it with heat shrink is also a good idea. Tuck away in the back of your mind that if there is a failure check the in line fuse first (which you should have removed) and then check the RCA plug.

when you wire the rca jack for the nmea cable coming from your position indicating equipment, nmea + connects to the center pin and the - connects to the outer shell for the icom 502...
