Default Can I make my own NMEA Cable for my Furuno 1622

I was wondering if I can make my own cable to attach my GPS to my radar. I have a furuno 1622 and it requires a 6 pin plug. I only need one about a foot long and the shortest furuno has is 5m. I realize I could just cut it but I was ondering seeing how I only need two wires I was ondering if I could just connect the two wires I need to the proper pins in the back. Basically if I could find the proper size female bullet connector I don't see why this wouldn't work>

yes you can do your own, they made the one that came with it didnt they? . I have my radar unit in the electronics box, and my gps on the console. running my own wires in the T-Top tubes was easiest for me.

Make sure your Furuno doesn't have an nema output channel as well. I have a Sitex and it will transmit the cursors position as a waypoint. Handy to say the least.

Good luck on finding the plug.

Maybe today you only "..need the two wires..." BUT, tomorrow you will need two more (or the rest..) and you will wish you had bought the cable in the first place.

You could run the wires from your radar and your GPS to a juntion block under your helm and connect your two wires or just butt splice the two wires together. This way if you need to move your units in the future you will still have the factory ends.

The cost is in the plug, not the wire. Probably best to use the Furuno plug to avoid any problems.

PS for Gabby1- Butt splices should not be used for electronics on a boat. They will cause you headaches down the line.

Why do you say Butt splices are no good? I have several under my helm area that have been fine. I wrap them in electrical tape after I crimp them.

Gabby1-
They are not a reliable way of making an electronics connection on a boat. If yours have lasted a long time then you are lucky. Most will eventually come apart and show signs of corosion.
I don't know of any professional who would use them. When I install things myself I try to follow the guidelines that the pro's use.
A proper splice with shrink tubing will hold up longer.
