Default On-Board Chargers

There are so many different brands of On-Board Chargers; Guest, Dual Pro, Pro Mariner, Merchant Marine and XPS by Bass Pro.

Which brand should I purchase for my bay boat and what features should I look for?

Thanks.

What is the size of the boat?
Number of batteries?
On-board electronics?
How often do you go out?

All this stuff helps determine your charging needs.

I have and am happy with the Guest charger. I have 2 Batteries in the front that I use for trolling. My guest charger lets me plug in easy over night to recharge. I have a seperate charger for the back batteries. They rarely need charging. The people that I talked with also were happy with their duel pro chargers. Can't give you any input on the others.
Depending on how many batteries you useon your Mako bayboat, I would recommend getting one that charges them all.

Thanks guys. I have a 21' Mako BayShark with 2 batteries under the console for the trolling motor and 2 batteries in the stern for the motor & electronics. Average use is 1-2 weekends a month.

I'm interested in a 3-4 bank charger but I'm unsure of which brand to buy. Their probably all good brands but I wanted to ask all the THT folks before I purhcase.

Waterbug,
I just bought a dual bank Pro-Mariner. I looked at all the models you mentioned and they all seemed to be close in terms of performance in the same price range. Just make sure it is salt water capable, which they have written on the box and buy the one that looks the pertiest.

Waterbug,

Just bought (online) and installed a ProMariner Prosport 20+ charger. Three banks, 20 amps total and is waterproof and saltwater tested. Don't know the durability yet but has two year warranty. Also, cost is less than most of the other 20 amp three bank chargers. On my last boat, had a Guest 2611 two bank charger that worked great. Had 6 amps per bank.

Compare price, features and warranties, then get the one that does what you want it to. Everyones' needs are different. Just my opinion.

The Bass Pro XPS chargers are engineered and made by Pro Mariner. I have one for my trolling batteries, works good.

Check out Dual Pro http://www.dualpro.com/ Mine works great. I like the idea of their no trickle charge technology, no cooked batteries from over charging. This has been one of those products that you install and forget about, because it works so well. Check out the warranty!

I am using a device called Battery Minder for my 2 batteries on my 23Seacraft. It says that it will work for up to 4 batteries.

I am using a Dual Pro SE which puts out 10 amps per battery. Has worked great for 1 1/2 years. The largest charger they make is a 3 bank. Whichever you choose get the AC plug wired into your boat so all you have to do is connect an extension cord to the outlet.

Check out the web site http://www.dualpro.com/ I am pretty sure Dual Pro does indeed make a four bank charger.

I have a Xantrex Tru-Charge. I have had good luck with their products. Regardless of the brand, you want to make sure that it is a 3 stage charger (if it doens't specify, assume it's not) and that it has a gel/flooded/agm switch. I think the standard 2 bank 10 amp (one of the most popular sizes, but you probably need a bigger one) runs about $150. This is the one that came factory installed in my boat, so I didn't pick the brand, but like I said I've had good luck in the past with their inverters and chargers and probably would have picked that one anyway.

Go look at www.stealthcharging.com, it not only charges your batteries but conditions them for a longer life expectancy. I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with them and they have a superior product than all the rest IMHO. I just bought one if that tells you what I think of them.
