Default Icom 502 programmability

Does anyone have any information on the programmability of the Icom IC-M502 radio?

What do you mean "programablity"?

You can "tag" channels to be scanned (some units call this program the channels). In other words, you can decide which channels will be scanned in scan mode.

You can "program" other folks' DSC ID's, and then call those folks.

You can "program" your DSC /MMSI # into the unit.

You can "program" which channel you would like to use as a secondary calling channel (09, ...).

OR, you can read the manual:
http://www.icomamerica.com/support/manuals/ic-m502.pdf

Hope that helps.

Sorry. I guess my note was a little bit too circumspect.

I am interested in any information surrounding possibly undocumented programmability such as enabling the expanded channels or anything else that may be possible with the radio.

As far as I know, there is some software programmability of this radio but details on it are hard to find. (as is the software)

Well, my m502 was stolen last year so when I replaced it I asked the nice people at consumers marine to enable the expansion channels. I now have a bunch of extra channels, but I have no idea what to do with them.

So yes, it can be done at least by an authorized service center.

Gerg,

Thanx
Bill

The first part I can answer easily (though I had to power on the unit to be sure), the second I haven't a clue on (the freq's they correspond to). Some of these definately aren't on standard VHF's (my other 2 don't get 00, 02, or 04 for example, nor many of the new a channels) and some are new (lettered chanels C, E, F, L, P).

Some busy weekend day next summer when I'm at the dock I'll scan the new channels and see if anyone is using them. I pretty much just ignore them for now.

I now have the following channels on this VHF (Icom M502 with expansion channels enabled) - (in this order of progression as you wheel through them, a "->" means I see all channels in this range):

00, 00a
01a -> 05a
06
07a
08
09a -> 19a
20, 20a -> 23a
24 -> 28
28a
29 -> 61, 29a -> 61a
62
63a -> 66a
67
77, 77a -> 83a
84 ->00, 83a -> 00a

and then it continues though with some different channels:

00 -> 16, 00a -> 16a
F1 -> F7
L1 -> L3
C1 -> C4
E1
P1 -> P3
