Default Garmin 182 ?

Just purchased PC interface cable for the unit. My question is how do you power up the unit? Where do you plug the 7 pin plug into.I got the PC plug figured out and the plug for the Garmin. Do I have to get a DC power supply from Garmin or can I get one from Radio Shack. Thanks. Tim

You might find you have a plug in wall supply transformer/charger from some cordless device you can use. Just look for a 12 VDC output on the wall device. The 182 while runing in demo mode without the transducer attached consumes allmost nothing, 500ma is enough for it to run.

If not,go to a Wallmart and look for a universal 12VDC power supply for a game or a small walkman ect.

I have even taken 12vdc off my computer power supply and use it with the serial port connection to upload and download from the computer to Garmin's units.

I did it to my buddy's HP computer and his 182C unit also so we can exchange track plots. That way all you need is the Garmin's #010-10082-00 power/data cable(bare wires),a9 pin serial data plug, and a 4 pin computer power supply plug

If you need a little help e-mail me,and i will post the "How To", with pictures on this site.

Default Garmin 182 ?

Tuna thanks for the reply. The cable I have is part # P/N 010-10150-00. It has 3 plugs one for the serial port ( 9 pin ) one for the garmin unit then the other is for the power supply.this power supply plug has 7 pins. Will that plug work with a 12 vdc unit from Wall-mart? Thanks Tim.

You have the Wrong Cable the one you have is for GPS 126($38.09 list price). That cable is not listed for use with the 182 unit.

What you need is Garmins#010-10083-00 power/data cable(with bare wires). Where the red wire is 10-32 volts Positive DC and the black wire is ground.

The cable you have may be abled to work with your unit ,but i don't know the pin out on the 3rd plug and garmin list that cable as needing to be used with either:cirarette lighter adapter#010-10077-00($23.30),ac adapter#010-101153($41.95),or the cable i listed#010-10083-00($23.30)

On that 3rd cable plug you have that replicates the plug on the 182 unit when the proper end is connected to the 182 unit. You could stuff a red wire in pin position #1 that is 10-32 VDC Positive and then a black wire in pin position #2 that is a ground wire .then connect the wires to a power supply you find ata WallMart or Radio Shack.

If it was me i would return the #010-10150-00 cable and get the #10-10083-00 cable and let me tell you how to wire it up to a serial computer plug and the power supply.
