I have the CD Mapsource for my 182C. The manual says I can download maps but not waypoints to the memory card. Is there a way to produce waypoints on my PC while running the Mapsource program and then get them transferred to my 182C? Someone suggested you can transfer waypoints by hooking up direct from the 182C to my computer. How does that work?
Ron
doesn't the 182c have an internal memory? on my 162, i can mark waypoints in mapsource on my pc and download them via the pc cable to the unit. it asks you when you start the download to choose maps/waypoints/routes/etc to load.
i thought it was the same with the 182, with more memory
IF you're using a card reader, you can only download the map portion. The other option is to get a A/C-serial port adaprter and hook up the whole machine to your PC. cgrand, I had a 162 and working with it was a dream. I now have the 182 and it's mounted in the dash. I had to buy the card reader and it's a royal pain. I even went out and bought a blank card to transfer the map, because when you buy an unlock code, you can download to two machines. I figured I would save money. Well, it wasn't worth it.
cgrand,
I'm glad they gave it to you for free, because it was part of the package with the 162 when I bought it. Didn't come with the 182. The internal memory in the 182 won't accept maps. I tried. It must just accept waypoints. I'm going to unglue the 182 and play with it over the winter.
latest version of mapsource and firmware for units allows you to load waypoints, routes and such to memory cards via usb card reader. you can then load into units memory, once you put the card into the unit.
and you also can load from unit to cards, then into puter via card reader.
glad garmin FINALLY did this (thanx!). another reason to upgrade software and firmware.
Landlubber, I just downloaded the latest software for the GPS unit and the latest Mapsource software. Hey hey it now transfers waypoints, etc. to the memory card. Much thanks.
Ron
1st, a digression.....being the prepared type, i always carry a spare memory card loaded w/ maps and waypoints, just in case one in unit gets fried, wet, whatever. this is another reason to buy the blank cards, rather than cards with bluechart maps on them already. (this assumes you can NOT erase and re-program the "pre-programmed" bluechart cards -- i have no idea if you can).
rogerst.... keep in mind what everything is called, does. Mapsource is the basic software for your puter. bluecharts are enhanced nautical maps for use w/ mapsource in puter (mapsourece is included when you buy a bluechart cd-rom), or just directly for use in unit via pre-programmed memory cards, or ones you program yourself (via mapsource). then there's the firmware -- what garmin confusingly calls software -- for the units themselves.
check garmin website (or THT) for updates, which are frequent and free for mapsource and firmware, and every 1-2 years for bluecharts (you'll have to pay $$$ for these).
I use the BlueChart chip in my 176C and the last time I talked to Garmin about updating it, they told me it would cost me $85.00 to swap my current chip for an updated one. I chose not to because there just were not enough changes to make any difference, mainly harbor updates/remodels. That was about 9-10 months ago.
landlubber,
Downloaded the updates. Up until now I had been trying to load a blank chip from the cd-rom because you get two donloads with the purchase of one unlock codes. Well its a royal pain to say the least. I went out and bought a pre-programmed card and saved the card to my pc. I ran the update for the usb programmer and then tried to copy the saved map to the blank card and all I got was the basic map. So much for technology. I just figured I'd have a back up, but NADA.
