Default new chart plotter

hey guys ...well finally found the boat, thanks to alot of the input from you guys, to my previous questions. We settled on a 1990 Grady white gulfstream with 1996 twin 150's .
Now for my next question...I would like to add a chart plotter to this boat in the 750 to 1500.00 range I also would like to have the ability to plug in different regional charts depending on where we go. What are your thoughts? thanks good fishing..I'll add a pic to my name as soon as I figure out how. Jim

Tough to go wrong with the Garmin 2006C for that price range.

Depending on the room you may be able to get away with the 182C as well.

Either way you really can't go wrong with Garmin and they have plenty of models
to choose from and fit your needs.

I'm with Gersly, I like the 2006C. The advantage of the 2006C is the number keypad. Makes entering numbers easy while in rough water. Now that the newer models are here you should be able to pick one up cheap. Customer service with the Garmin is top notch. They next day aired software update free of charge!!!

I do not want to start a anti Ray bashing here, I love the C series - but I was amazed that Raymarine charges for an optional keypad for the C ---the idea of "scrolling" when entering info is for my Timex watch, not a $1500+ chartplotter....besides it's another hole in your dash if you flushmount... tacky

I second the 1850 but with the sounder which is 1850WF. You should be able to pick one up for under $1500.00. I have the 1650df which has a smaller screen.Im not 100% sure but I beleive the sounder which is incorperated in the newer units is the same as the 582L.

Just trying not to derail this thread.

But the question was for a chartplotter not a combo unit.

Allbeit, the Furuno has a great sounder side of the machine
but their chartplotter leaves something to be desired.

Another strong Garmin vote, especially the 2006C.* The screen quality is much higher than the 182C, and Garmin's GPS/WAAS performance is flawless.* I've seen plenty of other brands that have issues maintaining GPS lock, or sometimes just WAAS lock.* Every Garmin installation I've ever seen has flawless performance in that regard.* The Bluecharts are the easiest system to use, and very informative on the water.* Garmin makes excellent use of color to warn you of shallow water, their "find" function works well for locating local marinas, fuel, food, etc.* There are really too many good things to say.*

The one downside is that Garmin's anti-glare coating doesn't get along with saltwater all that well.* My solution has been a cleaner available at www.klearscreen.com, other solutions have been posted by various users here.*

again thanks for the input, the boat came with fish and depth find it has a Humminbird wide 2000. so I am going to add a chart plotter. By what I've read the bluetooth programs are incredible as stated. I gusess ease of use is also important and it sounds like the 2006c is the size and usefulness I'm looking for. Gotta go get some prices so far your input on websites has made comparison shopping easy..........how about installatioon, I will tackle this myself and don't envision any problems. Jim

The 2006/2006C GPS receiver is totally contained in the antenna which mounts seperately from the screen.* It has a number of very fine-gauge wires in a shielded cable which you use to connect to the chart plotter, as well as to provide power to the GPS receiver itself.* The installation guide has a complete chart of which wires to connect to which, but the fine nature of the wires makes getting a reliable connection a bit of a challenge.* Make sure you use good strain relief to keep any weight from being supported by the copper itself.* It's not too hard, you just have to be careful.* You definitely don't want the GPS flaking out when you hit a wave or something.*

thanks guys ...I am VERY particuler when it comes to mounting and doing electronic hookups on land or sea. As mentioned I don't want any power outages when taking waves so I truly solder and seal all my connestions, liquid electrical tape is a wonderful thing by the way....thanks for keeping the thread going..Jim

For what it's worth, I have the new c series and love it. Super clear, after a day or 2 of using it, I can literally scroll through the pages without looking at the buttons, very user friendly. The radar overlay is a nice feature if you decide to add it down the road.
