Default Garmin 4210 Refreshing REALLY slow

Im not sure if its just my unit, or it is across the board with everyones.

If Im looking at my chartplotter and press the + to zoom in, say from the 20 mile scale to the 8 mile scale. The screen freezes for about 5-10 seconds before it refreshes and displays the zoomed in data on the screen. Is everyones this slow?

I have about 80 waypoints saved in memory, but nothing else. There is also some visual issues with the depth numbers displayed on the chart. Some of them are sort of a faded out color, almost like a shadow, and others are normal. It mostly goes away when I zoom it in to the 1 mile or so range.

I made a youtube video with my camera phone, so tell me what you think...

I am running the most current software update, so its not that.

I'll give you a bump here hoping Bluewaterpirate can better answer your question. I have installed a number of the 4XXX series but have yet to ride for an extended period of time with any of them. Yours doesn't look much slower than some of the ones I've seen. It looks like you have the screen detail maxed out and that may be slowing the processor down a bit. Have you tried reducing the amount of detail to see if that helps? Also, are you running it North Up or Course Up? I spoke with Garmin some time back for an install of mine where I noticed on a follow up ride with the owner that the refresh rate was very slow. The owner was running his unit Course Up and I was told that this also slows the unit down a bit. This was before an update that was supposed to help this issue was to be released. I have not been back on the one boat and I have put several updates on the unit since then, but I don't know if this issue has gotten any better.

i run course up.

I'll have to go back to the boat to see what my detail is set to.

Any ideas on the shadowed numbers for depth?

My other worry, is with this slow refresh speed, I notice that while running at speed (20-25kts) the plotter is jerky trying to figure out my heading. Im thinking of adding a autopilot (s1000) and worry that the autopilot pump will be working overtime trying to hold a specific course.. Its worse at slow speeds of 2-8 kts while trolling for salmon or Tuna

Just set the GPS speed from auto to 1 second (GPS setup)

Make sure you have Land Maps turned off too. You can live without those.

Add the autopilot, the screen refresh rate is a different issue and won't affect the S1000's ability to hold a course. In fact, I have another 4212 out there on a boat with an S1000 and it works very well.

The jerkiness is the issue Garmin has with the unit running course up. The only time I have observed this behavior was before Garmin released an update to help this problem. I have not seen what the same unit looks like now that the updates have been released. I was told that this is related to running course up.

A really old version of software had a very slow refresh rate on many of the displays. Make sure you have updated the software to the latest version....

My 4208 is slower than yours. I have a G2 Vision card in the slot, and take heading from a PB200, an external source, over N2K. I don't worry about it, but I'm never going faster than 10 knots. I was happy with the refresh rate on my 182C, and this is faster.

Cut back on your Latte's.[g]

Oops, sorry, MIQ. I just noticed you are in Washington State. It's not your fault, it's all that atmospheric caffeine polution up there. No cure.
