he can adjust the gains a bit lower to compensate. basically if the amp isnt clipping, then there is a good chance that his speakers will be fine. I run a 100 watt rms per channel amp to the 50 watt rms speakers in my truck, and they have been fine for 6 years now. more headroom is a good thing, if the amp is adjusted properly.
