480 clarion is the older model the 490 is the newer. the clarion amps will blow those speakers to pieces. Same with the JL 4 / 400. The new jl 4/400 is a nice little amp. The 4300 is the older one that is being phased out. The JL4300 is a closer match to the speakers that you are showing but still too powerful. 30 watt nominal/continuous power is into head unit territory. Get a better speaker.

I thought that you just had to be under the maximum power which on the website says 160w's?

if the amp's gains are set properly, he will be fine.

you can look at the max power but thats not what you will be running most of the time. You will be running continuous. Basically if you turn up the gain on your amps which you will most likely do because lets face it you have that extra power why not use it. Then you will heat up the voice coils too much and when the speakers go to turn back on again they wont work. Dont ask me how i know this.

he can adjust the gains a bit lower to compensate. basically if the amp isnt clipping, then there is a good chance that his speakers will be fine. I run a 100 watt rms per channel amp to the 50 watt rms speakers in my truck, and they have been fine for 6 years now. more headroom is a good thing, if the amp is adjusted properly.

Most speaker damage occurs from square sine waves that are created when an amp is underpowered and clipping. You can blow a speaker from too much power, but it will sound like crap first... all distorted, etc.
