Easiest things is to try it before you mount the antenna. However, my Garmin 48 works just fine through my soft top on the flybridge. Some signal reductions but plenty for use.

Why mount on the rail around the console, if you get a cover it will work a hole eventually. Just mount it on the flat area on the console dash, probably where your compass is, beind the wind shield.

Not a problem with a Sci-Tex, either.

I have a 22' W/A with a bimini and a garmin 180. I mounted the antenna on the dash just foward of the helm, under the bimini. It works just fine. NEVER had a problem with the signal.

My garmin antenna is mounted on top of my console. Never had any problems receiving signals, with or without the bimini top.
