I hate doing this and I tried doing a search but my search criteria yielded too many responses. Who has first hand experience with a CVS 106. A killer used boat that meet my criteria has the following:
Ray Marine 425 Plotter
ICOM 45
SiTek CVS 106.
Funny thing, when considering a used boat that seems like it’s a wet dream and meets your exact needs is that the electronics that the previous guy thought were killer, don't necessarily make your short list. I've done my research and although these may seem on the low end and may not be my first choices, the "Price is Right"!! Any thoughts about the CVS 106 or the Ray Marine 425 would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!!
Oh, I forgot, I offshore fish out of Cape Lookout and Ocracoke, and with my new boat out to Big Rock, Swansboro Hole, and Hatteras Canyon and hopefully out along the 100-fathom curve.
I had one on my last boat, all in all it was a good unit, never gave me any problems. It showed fish and bait real well and was simple to use.
Happy Holidays!
Joe

I have an CVS-106L on my Grady and it has worked flawlessly for the last 1.5 years. I use the split screen function (50 khz and 200 khz) as it allows me to see details as I troll and change depths. Details are pretty good, as I can see bottomfish when over a 300 ft. deep bank. Powerboat Reports rated it as a good buy, up there with Furuno.
I had one for about 4 years with a bronze through hull transducer. It worked fine, a good basic unit, and never gave me any problems. It is nearly invisible if bright sun hits it, however, as are all CRT displays. I was on a boat with one recently and I must say it looks pretty tiny and lacking detail compared to the 10.4" Furuno Navnet unit I have now! But it also cost about 1/8th as much annd got the job done for me when I had one.
I've got a CVS-106 (200khz) with a transom mount transducer on my Mako 224 -- the unit is great. As Classic Guy mentioned, in direct sunlight it is very difficult to see, so a T-Top is helpful. In water up to 300' it read great. In deeper water it's less detailed, but that's why they made the 120khz and 50khz models.
On of the best things about it is that Si-Tex here in St. Pete services them and has parts if needed.
I have the the unit in the 120khz version, and I like it. I purchased a Raymarine L760RC, and in all honesty I like the CVS-106 better for fish-finder duties. It shows bait fish and relief better. Ledges also show up very clearly. The L760RC has since been relegated to Chartplotting/GPS use. As said previously, bad in direct sunlight and requires some manual twealking for depth and zoom ranges (at least mine does).
I too have the CVS106...the original one (not the mark II or LCD). Not sure how old it is but I know it is at least nine years old. Did have to replace the transducer (bronze thru hull with temp and speed) once.
I bought the optional switch at a cost of around $80 so I could have the narrow and wide beam patterns and highly recommend it for anyone who does any bottom fishing....don't remember exactly but I think the two angles are 15 degrees and 40 degrees.
I have fished with the furuno 667 models too and I actually prefer the sitex, though I do like the split screen ability which mine doesn't have.
