Default Furuno 8252 25kw radar - problem showing birds

I have a weird problem with my radar. When I find a pack of birds or a few birds off to starboard, port or the stern I then proceed to turn the boat to that direction. Unfortunately then the birds disappear on the screen when I get the boat to their heading. I know the birds are there because we spot them with the binoculars. Any ideas why the radar doesn't show them off the bow?

If you have a boat/ship ahead, does it display correctly?

It could be the angle your radar is mounted. If it is angles up in front ( may be caused by the bow raising while trolling) you may be shooting over the birds when heading toward them.

Thanks thats a possibility. It also could be too low correct. When I have noticed the problem its been at idle (7 knts). Will have to go back and confirm how well it is picking up markers, etc in front. Generally when using the radar I'm in open water running and it seems to be fine but will confirm.

If it's mounted flat to the hard top it could also be blocked from seeing near the surface with the bow raised.
At any rate, if you see the birds in any direction, it's a mounting/aiming thing. On my Grady Marlin, I had to go about 7 degrees down to adjust for the bow rise at a fast troll. I had it mounted well forward and on a bracket so the hard top was not a factor.
