Default Garmin swap?

I jusy bought a boat that came with the 240 FF from Garmin..

My question is can I just swap the unit for the GPS GPSMAP and FF? I jusyt looked at the plug in the store for the transom transducer and they look the same.

It seems I can just get get the 168(same housing as the 240ff) to replace the FF in the same bracket and move on...

What is the difference between the in VS out antenna?>

Thanks very much, this is a spectacular forum

Default Garmin swap?

I recently bought a Garmin 2010. Before buying it I called Garmin to make sure the antenna on my 188 would swap out. Nada! The antenna is not the same. I have to install the new antenna. [I was going to use the 188 gps function as a spare]. I can still use the 188 as a spare, but I have to stow the old antenna for it in the boat. Point is, just because it looks like it would work, don't bet on it.

Having said that, I am of the impression that all of Garmins transducers are pretty much the same on the connection end. Garmin would know for sure.

OVENMAN, which 2010 do you have - color, monochrome? Do you have the FF (black box)? How do you like it? Is it fast enough? How's it in the sun? The reason I ask, is because I've been looking at them.

I like the L760RC plus FF by Raymarine but I'm thinking I should go for the larger screen.

I don't know which way to go at this time? One of the only things that I do know is that I really need to do the combo thing - real estate is in high demand - I have no electronics box.

Default Garmin swap?

It is in transit. I now have a 188. I will be leaving the 188 in sonar mode all the time and using the 2010 for gps........., that is if I can resist seeing all that huge screen in sonar mode!

I debated between the following three:
1. add a radar
2. add a fish finder
3. add a larger gps

Here is what I deduced for my use.

Radar would be nice, but I don't fish at night very often. I am hard of hearing and cannot hear a barge bearing down on me from behind. But then I would have to constantly monitor the radar for it to be effective. It would be a real chore to monitor the gps, radar, and fish finder really well all of the time. I will solve some of that problem by always taking someone along that can hear well. Also two pair of eyes are a bunch better than one.

I definitely wanted to be able to watch the fish finder continously while navigating around the gulf to aid in finding unmarked places, bait, schools of fish, etc. This is a huge advantage since I mostly troll [covering a lot of territory]. I figured out how to split the screen on the 188, but then both displays would be rather small.

I finally sat down and tried to be honest with myself and ask"what device do I use the most"? That was a no brainer. I am a structure troller. I am constantly navigating to some type of structure, wrecks, ledges, rips, previous catch sites, etc. I prolly look at the gps ten times as much as any other device. So it made perfect sense to upgrade there.

I am familiar with the operation of the garmin. The 2010 works exactly like the 188, so I don't think there will be any surprises there. If the refresh rate on the screen is any faster than the 188, it will be truly amazing. The main thing I am looking forward to is being able to just glance to see whats happening, instead of hunkering over and squinting at the unit.

As soon as I get the unit operating, I will report here.

How about a rear-view mirror for that barge problem?

Only problem with that is that if you see a barge in the rear view mirror, its o s time!
