short version: my basic question is since i boat/fish in a lot of different water depths (6' gunkholes, 30'-200' LI Sound, deep water off Montauk) what's the best transducer choice .. ie would a B164 (1000w) give me problems in the shallows, or would a B117 not handle deep water? It has to be a flush mount style. what do you suggest?
longer version: I think I've narrowed down the sounder problems i'm having to transducer placement. looks like my B744V is in disturbed water because of a strake forward. so i'm going to change the location of the ducer using an existing thru hull for an old ducer ... problem is the old thru hull is forward of the starboard engine raw water intake so i need to use a flush mount ducer (dont want a huge brick disturbing the engine intake). I do more shallow water and LI sound boating/fishing, but make a few deep water runs each season. the boat's a 1987 blackfin 29 combi diesel. I'm willing to drop the cash to get whatever is the best solution, but i dont want to put in a 1000w ducer if it means i wont have depth readings in the shallows. conversely, i dont want to go with a 600w model and compromise the fishfinding ability in deep water. any suggestions would be appreciated. thx.
Any of the 1kw ducers will step down in power at shallower depths, and they will all give superior definition to the 600w units due to more crystals internally.
Just make sure your sounder/ducer supports multi frequency.
I run an M260 and it is fine in shallower water. The only issue with it is the cone angle is fairly small, so I am looking at a really small area of water at shallow depths. There is a new 1kw ducer that has a wider beam, you may want to look at that.

thx for the response gerg. you wouldnt happen to know what model that wider beam is, would you?... no worries if not, i'll do some more research. Birdman seems to have had good luck with his b160 and i think that's a dual frequency. I may go that route. Birdman - would you choose it again?
