Mega Problems Trying To Install Garmin 5.60 Update
So far the new update down loads with a different format then in the past. Past versions would download as example 5.50, this one down loads as a long file name.
I went and tried to upgrade my 4212 as I have done several times in the past with upgrades, only this time is hung up on a screen that says Software Loading.
Does not do anything other then show that screen.
It also gave me an error something about being incorrect.
I am not a happy camper with Garmin at the moment.
I have to conclude there is some type of problem with the upgrade being able to talk to my 4212. I have never had a problem with an upgrade before.
Finally got it to load, but it took over 1 hour and it hung up three different times the forth time it installed.
I am not impressed with whatever Garmin changed in the files noting the new long file name.
I kept getting an error saying something about the installer was not correct for the 4212. I went in to down load the update again on different SD card as my forth attempt was going on, when I went back out with the new download, the card I always use had completed the download so I do not know why this one fought me.
I hope this does not become the norm with Garmin updates.
No change in file format, not sure what your talking about. You download adn EXE file, run it, it unpacks and installs on an SD card. nd I had no problems downloading it, and no problems installing it.
You may be experiencing a problem with your internet connection... everything looks fine on Garmins side....
I had no issues loading to a 4210 and 4208 networked. The prompts on the Garmin(website) screen is a little different, choosing SD card etc.. but no probs.

The naming convention was changed from something like this: GPSMAP5208_540.exe
to something like this: GarminMarineNetworkUpdatewithSDCard_20100301.exe
That should not matter, but it could confuse people.
I had to try twice to download the file from the Garmin site but I suspect it was an ISP problem. I have since rebooted my cable modem and things are faster on the Internet.
I had no problem down loading the file from Garmin's site, it was the install onto my 4212 that was very screwy.
I have never had a glitch instilling an update on my 4212 before. This time the update was very hard to install.
I got an error message on my 4212 screen that said something to the effect the update installer was not compatible with the 4212.
I have never seen that before, funny thing is it did install on the forth attempt. I was inside re-downloading the file from garmin's site onto a different SD card, when I went back out to the boat the down load had completed and I did not have to use the new download on a different SD card.
This is the first update that has not installed on the first try on my 4212. I just found it strange that it gave me that error about the installer not being compatible with the 4212.
It all went fine for my 5012. The difference was it prompted me to use a card with more capacity than the card I usually use. A quick drive to the shops for a new card and all continued with no issues. Once I inserted the updated card into my plotter it seemed to upload faster than usual.
I'm having some difficulty getting the file to unzip - any ideas on how long it took for those that were successful? I get to this point in the past, and there was no more than 1 minute to unzip and copy to my SD card. I'm on my 3rd try and it unzip popup is just sitting there. I'm not sure if anything is happening or what. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit - wonder if that has something to do with it. In all prior attempts, no issues installing on my 4212 and 4208 network. After reading the above and with my current experience, I'm getting concerned.

Ask yourself this - the last time you unzipped an update were you using the same PC / operating system? If so, it's not the OS.
Try this - download the file again and run it. See if it works any better.
As I've posted a few times, I had to download it twice. I suspect an Internet connection problem was to blame. I will apply the update tomorrow and post the results.
So I grabbed my work laptop and downloaded. Worked first time - actually did it twice, and both times successful. OS is XP. Last few times I updated my Garmin system using the home computer (OS is W7) so that's why I've been trying to use it. My home computer just locked up since my last post - this seems to happen every time I try to unzip the file. I think the Garmin software has an issue with the W7 operating system.

This may very well be. Or perhaps with the 64 bit. If you can pin it down for sure, I'm sure Garmin would appreciate an email or phone call with details.
Does anyone have the latest software loaded on a sd card already that I could just buy from them or borrow? I would be willing to compensate them for it.

As Ron suggests, Garmin will loan a loaded card to you for no charge except shipping/postage. They also take a 100% refundable deposit which they return when you return the card to them.
Took me three attempts to get my 4212 to take the update. First two times stalled out with screen showing "software loading" flashing on and off. Third time worked like a charm.
