Default Structure Scan and P66 Ducer placement.

Hey guys, I love this board. Great info. I have seen some installs done with the Lowrance structure scan and I am ready to install mine. I picked up a Airmar P66 for the HDS as well. So my question to all of you great knowledgable people is where would you place it. Sorry about the pics as they are from a cell phone. I really do not want to pay anyone to install these. It should be easy enough. The one for my Hummingbird is what is on now and it was piss poor at best. Thanks everyone.

I would put the side scan on the trim tab, and the p66 as close as possible while still being in the water on plane without distortion. Thats if your intrested in the overlay. If not then the closeness does not matter

It looks like your existing 'ducer it too low? Hard to tell by the photo but if the bracket is exposed to water flow you are getting a lot of turbulence that will kill the signal.

On the trim tab? Wouldn't that be at the wrong angle? The existing one is a little low but it is also underpowered as well. Keep them suggestions coming. Thanks again.

Id mount the p-66 as high as possible...........with the bottom of that ducer level with the bottom of the trim tabs. Id mount the SS ducer a couble of inches below and to the left obviously wich would still be a little higher than the current HB ducer.

Ok now I am confused. Can some one explain to me how the Trim tabs come into play. I thought (from the Airmar/Lowrance instructions) that at the lowest point would be best.

The reason I say the trim tab is because no more holes in the transom. The structure scan ducer sticks out really far. The tab is a place that is adjustable and all the way up would be the right location. Your not going to use the side scan at speed when the tabs are more likely to be down.
I spoke to a Lowrance engineer at the miami boat show and he said that was a great place and it would deffinately take the abuse it would get there with the tabs deflected down

Would this not put the SS ducer a little far to the right? I guess it can't be in the middle of the boat as is. So I will just need to take the orientation into consideration when looking at the display. When they show a picture of optimal positions to mount the transducer in the manual the place where my trim tabs are is considered a bad position. Now that may be for a boat that is without Trim Tabs. There is to be a Lowrance rep at our local Fishing boat show next week along with a 90 min tutorial on the HDS. Maybe he can give more insight. I really appreciate the help you guys. Any pictures of your installs?

just make sure its below the trim tabs and engine bracket. Draw a line and stay under it. If you want the overlay make sure the P-66 is in correct close proximity.

Is it a step hull. If so no transom mount transducer will work well underway. Make sure there i s nothing attached to the hull in front of the ducer

It doesnt matter if you have a stepped hull or not. Structure scan only works up to about 6 mph. Here is a pic of mine and it works perfectly. Mine is a Humminbird SI but the mounting requirements are identical. Might be hard to see but the ducer is directly under my jack plate. The bottom of the ducer is just about the same height as the bottom of my tabs. Anything projecting outward on the same plane or below will interfere with your side view!!

Hope this helps!!
