Default The funniest thing to me

I love to look at all the expensive boats online...Albemarle, Carolina Classic, Parkers, Grady's, Whaler's, Hydra-Sport, ect...

All of these boats are absolutly gorgious...most 60K plus...The funniest thing i see though is a beautiful boat like these then when you look at the dash you see a Humminbird 100Sx sittin on the dash...the $89.99 special!! Any one else tend to see this and wonder what the heck these people are thinkin....

I just find it kind of funny!

ALL THE TIME!!! DRIVEs ME NUTS!!! That is EXACTLY why I am so adamant sometimes about stressing a quality product around here and some people get pissed off, which of course cracks me up.

People spend $50 or $100k for a hull, and then say, "I only have $300 left to buy electronics..." COMMON already!! Squeze out a few more greenbacks and get some REAL equipment to go with that rig already!! You pay for it over a few years....just spread it out a bit. Anywho..

Yea
Well guess what guys. I own one of them useless Humminbird sounders. I don't know what model it is ( came with the boat ). So far this year this piece of crap has helped me in catching 34lb-23lb and 16lb chinook salmon.
Whats really funny to me is you guys that spend $600+ on a FF to catch 2 or3 lb fish. I'd rather spend the money on fuel, oil, and calling in sick from work, cause we all know the only way to catch fish is hours spent with your lines wet

Tyee,

Back when I was a kid, in south Florida, I used to fish day after day with cane poles. Caught a bunch of fish with them too. That doesn't mean that tomorrow I'm gonna toss the Internationals and go back to them.

So let's see, you've caught 73 pounds (roughly the weight of one good fish where some of us operate) of fish using your Humminbird, just think what you might have done had you actually known what was under the boat

First let me say I have NEVER owned a Humminbird. But I have a few friends/relatives that have and still do own them. The Humminbird units had alot of problems back several years ago, I will not argue that point, However, The newest Humminbirds in my opinion are vastly improved units. In Fact, my brother has the 400TX Bird and that unit is as good as anything I have seen in its price range. Having said all that I kinda agree with the other posters about seeing a 50K boat with a 200 buck FF on there is kinda comical. Just my 2 cents, Joe.

I agree, for me at least my fishfinder is worth its weight in gold (furuno fcv292).When i take people out for tuna I need to pick up bait, thermocline, structure, and be able to distinguish what kind of fish are below.I would never be able to do that with a $100 machine. If it works for your type of fishing then your golden, but like thom said, imagine what youll catch when you really know whats beneath.Dont always rate the quality with how much you pay,i have a furuno ls6000 as a back up (paid around $325 some years ago)and from time to time try it out just to compare with my main unit,Im always amazed how good it performs, maybe not as detailed but damn good unit.

Fish on !!

No1 said they were useless...Just a waste of money...if you buy a machine for 6 or 7 hundred bucks and it lasts you 10 years thats not much compared to gas, oil, matinence, wax, ect...Even if you dont have a $50+K boat (I know i sure dont)how can you catch fish you cant find...a good fishfinder to is is more valuable than any piece of electronics on board (except the auto pilot and GPS...)

If we can return the original topic for a moment: putting inexpensive electronics on expensive boats. I can think of at least one reason some people might do this. Many, many boaters are not anglers, only take their boats out a few times a year and when they do, it's only on nice days in well marked channels and familiar deep water. Their thinking is that they don't need to spend $1000 on a complicated fish finder when they only really want a simple machine to tell them the depth under the keel. Furthermore, there are a few boats at my marina that never leave the slip. For these owners, the boat is an affordable way to buy a weekend cottage by the water. If the boat only goes from the slip to winter storage and back, there's not much reason to spend thousands on electronics.

It's not my cup of tea, but it works for a lot of people.

On the other hand, I cringe (not laugh) when I see an expensive boat that's otherwise obviously outfitted for fishing with really cheezey electronics.

When you go wreck fishing in 220 feet of water, you'll see what it means to have a quailty machine. There, a Hummingbird won't cut it.

When you fish the North-East Canyons in thousands of feet of water and catch 100 plus pound Tuna on a regular basis, you'll see how worthless a Hummingbird will be.

But,
If you just want something to show you the bottom, and your not a die hard offshore fisherman, then you really don't need that grade stuff.

hmm. I think I might have a use for that humminbird ff on the back shelf. My Scitex is great in deep water, but less than 5 feet it craps out.. just when I'm getting concerned with how much more depth I have. I'm running a Shamrock 260 with a keel to protect the prop and rudder, but I'd rather not ground it.

whaddaya think? will that weak-@ss humminbird find its niche right next to the CV106 and pick up the slack?

if i fished freshwater they might be perfect but, when i am trying to catch bait donw here with 100 idiots and the bait goes deep and i catch my bait in 15 minutes and everyone scratches there head , its great for me. this was more alon the lines of what i meant, add gaffrig throttles and gauges 1500 at least and then lowrance i would skip the gauges and get better electronics

My Sitex CV106 does pretty good to about 3'. I run mine in manual so I do have to adj the gain a little in shallow water. There is a offset that might help you also.
