Please excuse the appearance of derailing the thread. When I consider electronics I consider rudimentary backup in case all the installed stuff craps out due to battery/electronics failure.
I have a new EPIRB. Had to buy it the day before leaving NJ as the owner kept his. It is an ACR unit class II (does not self deploy) and will be kept in the ditch bag.
I also have a portable VHF radio and and a personal EPIRB and strobe attached to my personal life jacket.
I also plan to have the backup plotter and GPS and second VHF on a separate battery from the batteries that power the main electronics.
I have a large 6 person offshore liferaft, but it is in a canister and I have no place for it in the cockpit. I do not want to wait for a raft to self deploy once the boat has sunk 30 ft, nor do I want to walk to the bow and try to deploy it in a storm. Therefore I want it somwhere in the cockpit. I have a spot in mind, two adjacent fish wells converted to storage units below the deck that could be enlargened to hold the life raft and related safety stuff.
My wife must really love me as she has offered to pay from her money for the life raft and other safety equipment. My wife also suggested that I get the SPOT personal beacon so that she can follow the movements of the boat and update the float plan when calling for assistance.
I just went thru the same sort of decision making process. I just bought a 36 center console that needed updating, so I removed the Navnet 1 system (6 years old) from my Hatteras and installed the 10.4 display right next to the 7" in the center console of the Dakota. It works great!
Next, I was leaning to try Garmin, but the bigger radars won't be out till Feb (they say)
Then it hit me.. I'm 56, I've used Furuno for 30 years and know how they work. I decided to go back with newer technology Furuno units in the same holes, they will work about the same and I can use my 1kw Shoot thru transducer from the old system that was on the Hatteras.
I have several boats, as you know, and I think the "learning curve" energy can well be spent elsewhere. I alway use Icom radios and will stay with Furuno.
People have told me great things about Garmin, but I recently sent my 10.4" display back to Furuno for the trackball issue and they rebuilt the unit to recent specs at no charge... They get my business, please don't tell them I ever thought about Garmin.
Good luck with the new Bert. I'm repowering mine with 450 Cummins.

Sounds sweet. But I hve to tell a story about red led lighting.
A few years ago I was coming back into New London at night and I had my red cockpit lighting turned on. You really can't see it from the water, so I thought it was fine.
As I approached my cove, a ferry hailed me (their terminal is just outside my cove and he was following me up river). Apparently the red lights really confused him. His wheelhouse was four stories above me and all he could see from a distance was my white running light and the red cockpit lighting. He couldn't understand why he wasn't gaining on me. It appeared like he was approching my port bow.
He made a strong request that I not run with those on anymore.

Great Choice. The install is not too bad either. We did our own and am very happy. Like you said before, it allows you to much better understand things in case you ever have an issue.
With that I will also say that I only use 15% of the capabilities since I don't spend everyday on the water. With multiple displays you will want to be mindful of the master and using that to power up and then you can power down with any of the units. I have 3 MFD's and have been very happy so far. Having a cockpit display is nice for fishing.

Gus You will be happy with the selection. I know you have some knowledge of Furuno from your other boat. Is Howard going to do the install or are you going to do it yourself.....Mark

Dale Graham, he has fished with me and works for the coasties, will help with the install.
I selected only Furuno (except for the AIS) to ensure plug and play and simplicity of installation.
I want to do the install so that I can do basic trouble shooting.
I have a few (yet to be announced) goodies that Howard will be supplying to me over the winter. More to come on that later
12kw radar- awesome. You can cook hamburgers when you're not spotting birds!
Funny- installing electronics is one of the few jobs on the boat that's really fun for me. I was actually disappointed once I completed the refit of all my new stuff. Maybe I'll sell it all on Ebay just so I have an excuse to call Jim/Beth again- BOE sure is great to deal with.
