The new Garmin MFDs (400/500, 4000/5000 series) originally read only SD cards. A recent firmware upgrade gives these machines the ability to read HC cards. Update your firmware (with a 2GB card) then you can use the bigger memory cards. It is fortunate that this change could be made in firmware. Garmin scores again!

That forum isn't proving overly useful. They have one guy answering posts with "yeah, that's the way it works". I haven't seen much useful info posted there.

And many laptops don't.......

This is definitely the correct answer. Update using a standard SD card (at least a 64MB for a 4xx.5xx and a 256MB for a 4xxx/5xxx). You should then be able to use a SDHC card.
