Default Stereo Sound.

I noticed that when my stereo is balanced to one side or the other the sound is much clearer and deeper. When the balance is dead even the sound is very tinny, no deep bass or clarity. 2 speakers only, both in the electronics box.

Any ideas or is it my shot out hearing?

you have the positive and negative speaker wires reversed on one of your speakers.

That sounds like it. Easy to check and whoever installed the radio should have observed polarity.

You can also pick up a cheap "Test" CD that has all kinds of tracks for checking things like phaze.

But that's where the problem is.

There should be a plus and minus terminal on each speaker. Or color codes. If not, set them side by side and mark the right (or left) terminal of each speaker with a marking pen. The same one on each speaker.

Check the wires from the wiring harness on the stereo. Depending on the type of wires used, there will be a way to identify the "Plus" or "Minus" (ground) wire. It could be color, it could be a ridge on one side of the insulation, or printing on one side of the insulation. It doesn't matter, but all the wires need to be connected the same way.

So, the grounded wires at the stereo connect to the "-" or unmarked terminal on the speaker and the "left" and "right" wires from the stereo connect to the "+" or marked terminals on the speakers.

If the speakers are from different manufacturers or do not match, that's another issue that I won't get into unless it's needed.

Thanks for the reply and help. I was making fun of myself in the previous post. Sorry if that was not clear. I did replace the speakers and obviously got the polarity wrong. As soon as Ida blows over I will go out and fix it.

Again thanks for the response.

You're welcome. It should be as simple as reversing the wires on one speaker.

I have to give you credit for noticing and describing the problem well enough to get a solution. Many folks would just say the stereo or speakers were junk.

Well I just braved the last of Ida and swapped the wires on one side. Sounds a lot better.

Again thanks!
