Garmin 498 gremlin?

I've got a Garmin 498 that suddenly yesterday while trolling in 50' of water started blinking on 3.5'. Turned unit off and back on, no change. Disconnected cable from back, reconnected, still 3.5'. Made sure transducer was in full down position and once again, no joy. The GPS mapping functions all worked correctly. I guess I will take a toothbrush and clean the plug real good, but beyond that anyone have any ideas?

Well, clean BOTH plugs. The one from transducer into the y-cable and then the main one into the 498.

Is the sounder painting a normal picture (normal for 3.5 feet, not "really" normal) on the screen. If the picture is missing (i.e., the screen is basically blank except for the 3.5 foot reading) I suppose it could be the sounder circuitry in the 498. You can also check in the system menu somewhere for connected accessories, and see if the transducer shows up. I'm away from my unit and manual right now, so can't tell you exactly but it's in there somewhere.

Thanks very much but stupidly (although luckily) this gremlin was just operator error. Somehow I had changed a setting from "auto" to 3' in one of the menus. When I changed it back, the unit was reading normally and I could erase all of the "remanufactued Garmin 498" sites I had saved from the internet!
