Ok, so I got the boat I was looking for, 2003 Pursuit 2460 which is great. Now I am working on cleaning it up and making a few changes to items for next season.
I am not sure what to do with the Furuno GP 1650 WP plotter/sounder? It seems to be working OK and loaded with features but has no card for it. I will need to buy a card or at least some cards because we trailer boat everywhere from the FL Keys to NC and all over the mid west lakes and rivers.
Don't really like where it is mounted on the dash and would like to move it onto the console but before I do all that work I want to decide if it is worth the time and cost.
So I am thinking, would I be better selling it (is it worth anything?) or putting it in the pile of other old electronic junk before I throw it out. Anyone need a LP turntable or 8 track player?
At this time I don't really have $1,000+ budget for replacement so would be more like $500 budget to find a replacement. Will that be better than what I have with a little investment in cards?
Heck my old boat had simple monochrome depth reader and hand held GPS and I found my way around and caught some fish once in a while.
Furuno makes top of the line products. Just becasue its an older model does not mean it wont perform. Get the manual and use it. I have a furuno gp 32 on my boat and I did not like it becasue I thought it was old. Once i learned to use it, i began to love it. So move it to a spot on the boat you like print the manual and use it. You should be able to navigate with the gps without a card installed. Ebay is a good place to look for those older cards.
Thanks for the quick reply’s. I have the manuals and have been trying to figure out what is best cards to buy? Seems like if C-map it must be the classic. Going to need to do some more research to figure which is best.
How about getting the screen to read better in direct sun light? It is great at night, do you know if they do replacements?
I found the link for Furuno service, maybe they can help.
I have one, great units, they just don't update (redraw) as fast as the newer units. When the unit is on you can adjust the brill and contgrast to get the look you want for the light conditions.
Great little unit that came on our used boat. Spend some time with it, quite a device and your budget may not improve you much other than screen quality. Age shows on our 02' model in bright sunlight, you get used to it with adjustments.
Since you are a NC guy, maybe you can make recommendation to best C map or other for me. When I visit NC it is to Ocracoke and that area is kinda on the edge of several charts, what gives best information? I have lots of numbers on my handheld that I guess I will need to put into this unit. From what I read that has to be done manual?
Of course having been visiting the area 40+ years I know it is drive by sight on the sound side. Chanel markers rule but even then changes in the inlet can be daily. Charts either paper or on GPS are fun to study but after running around the first few days I just set some new waypoints at key locations. Somehow growing up down there in the summers as a kid without all this fancy electronics we caught just as many or more fish? Either way it is still a special place.
Where I was considering to relocate the unit would be fixed mounting it into the dash, but do you think being able to change the angle to see the screen better is that important?
I have my two Furuno units in Navpods. You can see then here, the 1650 is on the left. the Navpods let you change the angle all you want.
I cannot remember what chart I have, somewhere in VA to somewhere in FL. I fish in southern VA to southern NC with no issues with it. I can check on the chart number later tonight, but they have probably changed
I am not happy with C Maps. I suspect they are cutting back on costs. I purchased the Max card for Atlantic East Coast with intentions on island hopping through the Caribbean. I bought the card in July, when I received it, they had a statement "reduced coverage for the Caribbean". I hit the roof and called them, they offered a free update due out in October, so I was satisfied. When they update became available they contacted me, this was impressive.
So I returned the old card (C Map Max) and they replaced it it with the new update. When I got this update, they shipped via donkey and took forever. It had the same statement, "reduced coverage for the Caribbean". Talk about being pissed off. So now I am out hundreds of dollars and no better off than in July.
Let me state that I worked in map publishing and we then owned Jeppesen, but then it was better run under Times Mirror, now Boeing owns them and they appear to know little about information publishing, they should stick to building planes.
I just purchased the MaxSea and it is impressive. Heads above C Map.
Sounds like an isolated case, but I really dont know. I can't imagine that being the case for the US. It also sounds as if something is missing. If they contacted you and said we have the update, you are saying they did not have any update?????
I am a happy boater today! Got out and played with the unit and found the screen adjustments, screen was so light I could not see until the sun hit it just right. Adjusting the tone made the difference. Wasn’t quite as intuitive as I would have thought, thinking tone was sound of alarms and such. Guess once you get to know it no big deal. I got all winter to read up on the instructions although is not as good as working with it on the water. Anyway, once I got playing with the unit and it’s great! In fact I found the mounting location as very practical. Should have expected the previous owner of the Pursuit put some thought into it’s location. Now I have to get the needed card or cards.
Thanks to all for the help.
Anyone got old Cmaps of NC they want to sell? How about any of the KY, TN lakes?
