Default recommend a fishfinder?

Hi

Can any of you recommend a fishfinder for the following criteria?
I have an 18 ft CC that I'd like to add a transom mount FF to.
I do fish some deeper lakes up to almost 200 ft, however most of the time i am in 60 ft or less.
All freshwater fishing.

Is there anything under 300.00 that is worth buying?

The more i search the more confused i get.

thanks

I have a garmin 340c that works great... Its no furuno fcv 620 but you said you only wanted to spend 300.00 I trust all of garmins lower end models. I use my to find wrecks and reefs in 100 ft of water all the time...Not to mention you can't touch any of furunos sounders for 300.00... Go with any of the lower end garmin sounders, like I said, its no furuno but it will do what you need it to do.

The garmin 400c comes to mind.... Nice model for under 300.00 I think it replaced my older 340c model. the 340c was a new model in 2006.

There's a fish finder and there's a depth finder. Unless there is a newer GSD22-23, I would pass on Garmin and go straight to Raymarine or Furuno. The problem, imo, is that there is no fantastiic fish finders for that price range, rather plenty of depth finders.

Maybe a compromise would be a Lowrance unit. For their many faults, they do make a good fish finder.

thanks for the info. Been looking at the Garmins. They are in my price range. The Raymarine and Furuno seem out of my price range. I have seen the older DS500x in places and they have gotten good reviews on here, but are they outdated technology?

Are the color hbirds or lowrance around that price worth it or would you recommend a mono one?

DS500x is not outdatet technology at all. Same technology as in Raymarine blackbox fishfinders and current Furuno models.

okay. i just wondered because it is a discontinued model. Most reviews i can find on it are from 2004 or so.

Will i be able to see baitfish or the thermacline with it?

The raymarine ds500's and 400's have a fogging problem inside the screen casusing the unit to fail. Thats why i bought the garmin... the raymarine does look better tho

Go with Lowrance they are a great fish finder and are geared toward fresh water fisherman plus they have a lot of options that you can set manually so that you can pick up things like thermocline.

+2 on similar experience, plus their Customer Service has done a 360 degree turnaround to the positive.

Raymarine has the fogging issue on the DS500 and the DS600 .....You can still use the finder, it's just not optimally visible ....If you live up north where it's colder, and you won't be using the boat anyway over the Winter, you can send it in to Raymarine and they will fix it ....I will be doing that to my DS600 as I live in NY and wlll not be using my finder during the Winter months ....It's head and shoulders above using ANY of the Garmin units .... I've caught MANY more fish and could tell cover from fish much easier with the Raymarine ...You could also go with Lowrance ...They make great f.f. .....Jim

I just installed a Humminbird 343c. Nice color. Small screen. Will show you all you need to catch fish in fresh water. I got mine (new) from a seller on ebay for $255 (included shippping) West marine lists them for $279 but you can get them for less. Very nice ff.

Whatever you decide upon, try to get the biggest screen you can. It's worth the extra $.
