Rotate the retaining ring counterclockwise a bit and take the ring and ball out. There are no contacts, just a couple of rollers that can be cleaned with alcohol. In the back of the retainer ring there are a couple spacers, a rubber ring and a plastic ring. Sometimes the rubber ring gets caught by the ball and can get mangled and even pulled out from behind the plastic ring. If it's really bad, you can get a replacement kit from Furuno for $65 Part no. 000144645

What about a trackball on a Furuno FR7112? It looks like the trackball is not removable from the front.

The trackball is moving ok, but the cursor on the screen is only moving up and down, not left and right.

If you can't fix it yourself by popping the ball out you can send it back to Furuno for repair. I just had the same problem where my track ball would only move the cursor up and down but not side to side. (Mine wasn't removable from the front)

Just go to their website and click on the "ask furuno a question" link and get the details from them on where to send it and what info they will need.
