I updated earlier and haven't run into any problems... but it's not like it's been out long enough to go through everything.

I checked (in my slip) before the update and the sonar showed no fish. I did the update and still no fish.

Either they didn't fix the problem or there were no fish under the boat. One or the other.

If Garmin can put fish under my boat, I'll buy 2 and I don't care what is on the display...

I did the update. I didn't notice anything special in the way of changes... I didn't get to test it much (or well) because it was rough as all hell.

Pete,
The biggest one I noticed RIGHT AWAY is the ability to HIDE WAYPOINTS in the WX displays. That's a GODSEND!! Thanks Garmin!!!

I noticed you wanted to go back to the "older" version . Why? I installed 5.4 and the sounder looked ok. One thing you might check before goig back down to 5.3. I noticed when 5.4 was installed, it defaults the Surface Noise reduction menu item to OFF. You need to turn that on (HIDE), and then the screen is crispy clear. Bete that was what you didn't like at the dock, cause mine at hte dock (5' of water) also looked terrible until turned that on.

I did the update today and noticed that while in auto-guidance my boat icon grew a little purple line coming from the stern. Maybe it's for cross track error.

Ha!! Yes, that is exactly what the problem was... I will check it this morning! Thank you!

Ok, I fiddled with the surface noise, and most of the red at the top is gone... however there are still some red "lines" (vertical) toward the top of screen. Water wasn't 100% calm, and only 2' deep... but from what I hear, not as "clean" of a picture as the "beta" that was around before the recent posted update...

Any thoughts?

I upgraded early in the week and noticed this same thing in the slip myself Pete. I turned off surface noise ( as this is normally how I run mine ) and it was still not as clear as it normally would be sitting in the slip. I used to get a very clean picture while sitting in the slip and never had all the clutter on the top 4' of water before. Granted the water could have been dirtier or what have you ( I did peek over and did not notice anything visible though), I did not have enough time to do any in depth testing. I am going to run around some over the weekend and see how the overall performace is.

I'm sort of happy you posted... I was worried that I was going crazy. Let's see what goes down with this. I MAY try to down-grade and see what happens... It is sort of windy and cold today, not really in the mood... as crazy as that seems.

I actually found a picture I snapped after the update. Normally there would be zero clutter ( noise, bang ) on the top 4' of water when I had the settings on Auto while sitting in the slip. I will test more this weekend and even downgrade if I need to to run comparison.

I really wish I would have taken a picture right before I upgraded, I will start doing this as a normal thing from now on just for my own comparisons. I have the B164 transducer by the way.

Chingator, Click Menu, Surface Noise, and set it to Hide. All that will go away.

Thats what surprised me Bird, I went through the on/off option a few times and it still stayed that way. Who knows, maybe there was something that floated up and was stuck on the ducer? I will definately update after the weekend.

I just got off the phone with Garmin ( nice and quick response time btw ) to ask exactly how I back-dated on the 5212 before I headed down to the boat. I love the unit, and was actually surprised to see that noise as I had never seen it before because I normally run with the Noise hidden.

When I turn off surface noise, the red bar at the top goes away -- but you see that bluish vertical thatching around the 8' mark on the pic above? That is what I get now...

I don't know what you guys are doing, but thsi is what mine looks like now. That's yesterday, and that's a school of bass. No noise, nice bottom detail.....

2nd pic is a hole that drops from 30' down to 80', and back up in about 50' (across). Auto holds it, shows nice detail, no noise.... at 25 knots.... I'm loving it.
