Ocean will tell you as low as possible - I'd go horizontal right above the drain plug. To really get a good effect I'd get at least one more and mount on either side of the plug.
you will be surprised how quickly semi murky water will kill the power of one light...for above 30 foot we think this is the min, below you can do two..

Thanks guys!
I would have liked to mount a couple A3's or A6's on both sides as in Glenns photo, but the Whaler construction would not allow it, so the one A6 in the center is it. I'm interested in watching baits into the lights at the dock and the cosmetic [pimped] look.
How are you guys running the power to these underwater lights? Though the transom? Above the waterline or below? Or over the transom and down to the lights? I could go through my transom door opening and discretely down to under the swim platform. but I hate to put holes in the transom...
The installation video shows drilling a 5/16 hole and the wires come out the back side in the center of the light. Then 4200 and 6 screws and its done.

Depends on what lights your installing. If you install the Ocean Amphibians, as posted by bradv, the wire comes straight out the back of the light. Just drilll a small hole, push wire thru and 4200/screw the light on. Done.
The assumption is that the light will never have to be removed? 4200 is pretty permanent. You'd have to remove the bottom paint to the gelcoat in that area to be sure it's bonded properly.
Actually, Ocean says (in the instructions on package, and on their website), to install them betwen 8 to 12 inches below the water line.
true...for the bigger boats..but the rep will tell you on mid size and CC's like the OP here, the deeper the better for transom applications shooting out the back...

Assumtion correct. Why would you remove it? Anyway, 4200 is not permanent. 5200 is. 4200 comes off fairly easy. And either way, you should remove the bottom paint down to the gelcoat.
Glen, why is that? Maybe because the hull is so far out of the water when running??
