Default Go back a version for GSD22 firmware... did we ever decide if it can be done?

I would, for testing purposes, like to go back to the previous version of the software for my GSD22... I remember a thread on the very topic, but can't remember if there was a conclusion on if and how to do it (and I can't find the thread ).

Do I just put the older software on my SD card (like I do with a new version) and pop it in? Or is there more to it?

Thanks,
Pete

The only way you can do it is globally by backing out of your current software version by pressing & holding down the up arrow (north) of your MDF while pressing the on button of your unit. After you do that you can reload the previous version of the software that doesn't contain the GDS software version you are currently running.

WARNING ...... WARNING ....... WARNING

1. You have to have the previous version of the software to do this.

2. Doing this will clear all your chartplotter settings. Make sure you have a good backup of ALL your waypoints/routes/tracks just in case.

I do not know if any way to just remove the GDS software by itself.

Software (firmware) updates are a fact of life. Running Windows on your PC? It's likely been updated several times. Productivity software? Same thing. My wife's car had to have a firmware update.

Look on the Garmin website and you'll see the bug fixes and added features for the updates. You may think you don't need the features, but you probably do need the fixes.

Garmin doesn't leave the old software on their website. There is a reason for this. If you ever need support or have a problem, the first thing they will insist that you do is update your unit to the latest version. They cannot support units running several different versions of software.

Same with asking for help on a web forum. If you're running version 4.1 and everyone else is running 5.4, there's no way for them to help you.

There was a time when you bought a piece of equipment and that was the best it would ever be. Had a bug? Live with it. Newer units had more features? Trade up.

I was in the computer field when DOS was replaced by Windows. Lots of kicking and screaming to drag some people into the 21st century, but here we are. Most of us.

Get with the program and update or refuse and get left behind.

Would it work to go back a version, disconnect the GSD22, then put the upgrade back on the MFD? I'm doing a new install and don't have the CSD connected yet and did the upgrade to 5.4.

I installed 5.4, and the GSD22 is working just fine. Just make sure you bring up the sonar display, click Menu, Seteup, and make sure Surface noise is set to HIDE. By default, it was set to SHOW which means it was showing all the noise. Once that change is made, it works very nicely.

They are also still working on it, so there will be another update I'm sure.

ha....too funny.

It's amazing when you are 100 percent satisfied with the performance of a product or piece of equipment and then for some stupid reason other than to have the latest and greatest software, you update it only to now be disappointed with your equipment.

What's the old saying......."If it aint broke, don't fix it."

FWIW surface noise is set to "OFF" and I'm still not happy with the new default gain settings for "auto gain" and how they affect presentation.

I should have left "working perfectly" alone.

Montgomery Wards wasn't "broke" so they didn't fix it. Same for Sears.

Companies and their products have to remain competetive if they are to survive. If Garmin designs and produces a product and then sits back on their heels waiting for the money to roll in, they will soon be number two. Then number three, then history.

Here's what you can do - go to a retail store that sells Garmin. The box with the plotter will probably have an update card in it to update from when it was originally made to the date it was shipped. This might be a 5.X or even a 4.X. The cards in my 5208 boxes were about six months old. Ask the retailer if you can copy the card. This should get you way in the past.

You should set Surface noise to HIDE, which effectively is "on", meaning the "filter" is turned on to hide any surface noise.

Here;s a shot with the latest version on the GSD22 from yesterday. That's a school of bass I drove over, and turned around to drive over again to anchor up.

LOVE the new version. Never lost bottom, not once, set to Auto. And didn't touch the gain either, pingin fish, showing bottom type and hardness, penatrating nicely, and no noise. Me things Garmin is on the right track. And they are still workin on it, going to be releasing another version soon.
