I would try that if you already haven't. If the waypoints were imported into HomePort OK, there's no reason they shouldn't be exported OK.
Try this: Have your friend create a couple waypoints on his new unit, then import them into HomePort. Delete them from the plotter and try to import them from HomePort/SD card. See if that works.
Then, import the waypoints from the old Garmin chip, export them to the SD card, and try importing them to the new plotter.
We can't blame Garmin for protecting their maps and charts, but waypoints are not "intellectual property", at least not theirs. Waypoints should be able to be moved back and forth and shared. Same as routes or tracks.
