Thanks ... so if that how it works, whatever is powering the speakers much come into play.
1. Clarion CMD-6, 2 speakers and no amp = which pair of speakers
2. Clarion CMD-6, 2 speakers + M2250 amp = which pair of speakers
3. Clarion CMD-6, 4 speakers and no amp = which 4 speakers
4. Clarion CMD-6, 4 speakers + M4500 amp = which 4 speakers

My only requirement from the sound system is that I can hear it while cruising which should be 4000 RPM's doing about 38-40 MPH. The boat is a Pathfinder 2400 TE.
Which system do you think would do the best job of satisfying the goal?

Reason: add more info
I had the 2400 path and went with a clarion head unit to a "refurb" clarion marine 4 channel amp on ebay for like 120 bucks. Full warranty and worked perfect the 3 years I had the Path.
Then go with 4 speakers.... 4 speakers in the 24 is the ideal set up, two in the console and two up front facing aft....I agree with Glen..do it right the first time.
If you intend on keeping that boat a while, suggest you get the JL speakers. Your boat gets wet....needs a speaker that can handle the abuse. JL will be the last speaker you buy for that boat. good choice on the cmd6... I just got one for my mav 18 master angler.

For anyone that might need to make a similar decision. Based on Glen's advice, I went with a system that included an amp.
I got the Clarion CMD-6, JL Audio M770-CCX 7.7" coaxial speakers and the JL Audio M2250 250-watt 2-channel amp. We mounted the speakers in the rod lockers facing aft. It sounds freakin' awesome. It'll blow you out the boat. We can hear the tunes running WOT and they sound great. Of course, I really do not know if the system wouldh have been sufficient without the amp.
Another big thanks on the install to Ringleader. Thanks, man!! By the way, the amp does complicate the install ... probably increases the effort by about 50%. You need a place to install the amp, heavy (8 ga. min) gauge wires, circuit breaker(s), extra wiring to bundle neatly, etc.
Thanks, Glen, for sharing your knowledge of these products.
