Maybe I'm missing something here , cuz the Birdman hasn't said anything, but the GSD 22 Update 2.90 has been out since 10/23/09. Has anyone played with it yet? ANy differences?
Looks like a pretty big update to me?? Haven't tried it yet, but a few those items are things I NEEDED. Glen, are you saying there is another update coming as well?
I hightlighted a few, directly from Garmin's web site: Changes made from version 5.30 to 5.40:
Added a control to turn off the AIS/Marpa Collision Alarm
Fixed issue where AIS targets with status of moored or anchored were showing up as lost prematurely
Added an 'Auto' option to the light sector control
Added a control to hide waypoints on the weather charts
Fixed bug where animated current arrows were displaying relative to North Up even in Head Up mode
Improved Mariner's Eye 3D operation under slow speeds
Added improvements to animated tide and currents to use smaller symbols and to draw them at higher zoom levels
Added the blue and black direction lines for orthogonal photo points
Corrected sonar noise rejection control to work properly in dual frequency mode
Fixed bug where zoom level would change when editing a route
Added ability to make sonar and video fields go to full screen in combinations by using rocker pad (4xxx only)
Fixed bug where Mariner's Eye 3D safe depth wasn't correct the first time you went to that view
Fixed shutdown when using the system information 'Save to Card' feature
Potentially dangerous points along auto guidance paths will be outlined in red. After the auto guidance calculation completes, a message will appear if there are potentially unsafe areas along the path
Fixed a bug where auto guidance lines can ignore the safety buffer on the first leg of the route
Changed the nature of seabed areas to simply label the area instead of drawing a circle and label
Updated the symbol highlighting on the chart to use the correct symbol size
Added support for calibrating Airmar DST sensors via NMEA 2000
Changed the water speed value that is sent via NMEA 2000 to be the calibrated water speed
Fixed issue where depth soundings were not drawing
Add ability to configure custom units in startup wizard
Fixed issue where maps created with Greek, Cyrillic, Easter European, Hebrew, Arabic, or Turkish writing systems won't display the proper text.
Corrected issue where user settings would not save at power down (GSD22 update).
Improved shallow water depth tracking (GSD22 update).
I must be missing something. I downloaded the software but when I run it I get a "No USB Data Card Programmers Available" error and it stops running. What's up?

You need to install it to a card reader that has your SD update card in it. If you have a new SD card, put it in your Garmin with it powed up. It will put a signature on the card that is required in order for the SD card and the reader to be recognized by the update software.
-Added a control to hide waypoints on the weather charts
The other one you mentioned in that video, Looping the forecast was already there, wasn't it? All the WX displays could always be looped. But I NEVER use the forecast display, useless in our area. They'd be lucky to get that correct 50% of the time. I use the Radar, seaconditions and temps. Those are real time for the msot part.
Fisheye,
First, bring a blank SD memory down to the boat, and fire up your 3210. Once it's booted up, insert the black SD card into the 3210. The unit will format the card and ready it for use. (you don't need to do anything).
Now go to Garmin.com, click on Products, then chartplotters, lastly select the 3210 from the list. Then click Software on the right side of the web page. It will display the latest available software version, and gives you a link "Download". Click the "Agree" button (standard software agreement statement....bla bla bla...) and save the file to your desktop. Once the download is completed, insert the formated SD memory card into your memory card reader slot on the computer. Now double click on the new file on your desktop, and it will install itself, and copy the new updated 3210 software to the SD memory card. When finished, simply removed the SD memoyr card from the PC, and install in the 3210 (while it is on). The 3210 will pop up some options, one of them will be "Update Software" Select that one, and let it go, it will take a few minutes, and reboot the unit (sometimes it will reboot more than once). It will be done when it reboots and goes to the main menu. Done, remove the SD chip and play with yoru new features.
ok im new to the whole GSD 22 thing..just got a garmin 3210 at a very good price...how do i get the update???
The link below is for the update for the 3210. Click on download. You will need a card reader with an SD card that is at least 64MB. If you dont have the update card that might have come with your 3210, any SD card will work. Just make sure to put it into your unit with the power on before putting it in the card reader. The link below will open an application that will look for the SD card in the card reader and install the update to the SD card automatically. Once that is complete, power your 3210 up and insert the card. Once inserted, your 3210 should prompt you to hit a key to apply the update. Make sure all Garmin devices and your NMEA 2000 network is on. http://www8.garmin.com/support/colle...t=010-00528-00
Not to side track this thread but while on the subject of improvements does anyone have any insight into future radar updates. Particularly, will duel range be available as a software update or only on the new 6xx and 12xx models.
Guys, the 3210 doesn't use SD cards. The card is a different format. I'm not sure exactly which one since I don't have it handy and since I just use my 4212 to do the updates over the network.
But it is a physically different form factor. An SD card will NOT work for a 3000 series unit.
The 3000 series of chartplotters use the proprietary Garmin data cards. You need a 32 mb card to load an update. I've had problems with computers recognizing the card programmer--my Dell notebook is the only one of 4 computers I've tried to use to update the card that actually recognizes the card programmer. Don't know why. Never heard of the "put a new card in the chartplotter to format it" procedure. I've run updates a couple times, and will run the new GSD22 update this weekend.

Thanks for the clarification. I have a 4210 so I assumed the 3210 would have been the same..

Well, it's really not "formating the car", it's writing a little file on it that has the model and ID of the chartploter in it. That how Mapsource, Homeport or the update software see's the empty card as the device (aka chartplotter).
What update? If your asking if the GSD22 gets new software in the 5.4 update, YES. Is it the final product? Not sure. By Glen's response above, looks like there may be another update coming....
