I think we are all awaiting the promised version 3.0, which I was told by Garmin at the FIBS should be out before the end of the year.

The best thing for you to do is call Garmin Customer support and with a refundable deposit they will mail you an update on a card to use with your 3210. But just so you do not have to do it again real soon you may want to hold off a bit and see if anything comes of this new GSD22 update

If you already have a GSD22 can you upgrade it or do you have to get a new one.
You can upgrade any GSD22, old or new.

What update? If your asking if the GSD22 gets new software in the 5.4 update, YES. Is it the final product? Not sure.
There is never a "final product" in software.

The 3000 series of chartplotters use the proprietary Garmin data cards.
Correct. Not an "SD" card. They and their "chip burners" can be purchased on e-bay. I happen to have a burner and several chips left over from my previous unit. PM if interrested.

must be missing something. I downloaded the software but when I run it I get a "No USB Data Card Programmers Available" error and it stops running. What's up?
Are you trying to update a 4XXX or 5XXX unit or an ealier unit (3XXX)?

The 4XXX or 5XXX units us an SD card, earlier units use a proprietary Garmin cip and a USB burner. If it's a 3XXX update, the software would be looking for the USB chip burner.

Get it from the Garmin website. Do you have a GSD22 (depth sounder) or just the 3210?

I've had issues trying to update my 3010C, but it appears I created them mostly by myself. There were a few readers that got through quality control with a bit too snug a fit for the Garmin proprietary data card. The one I had was one of the rectangular, rather than hockey puck shaped readers. Garmin replaced it. Another issue I created was trying to use some old StreetMap data cards. They are still readable in the unit (if you want to drive your boat down a street that was in DC eleven years ago!) but they have some kind of data protection that makes them unuseable in the card reader plugged into your PC. In fact, the Garmin software will spit up an error message about the clock needing to be reset, and when I forwarded it to Garmin Tech support they reply with a totally off the wall solution. The were willing to look beyond the book they are supposed to follow when I squeeked.

Many stores are out of the smaller Garmin data cards, and the 64 mb and 128mb are pretty expensive. It would be a good idea to latch on to a couple cards while you can, if you can find them.

I am seeing two updates discussed in this post.

The Garmin 5.4 and then specifically the GSD22 - 2.9 update.

Does the 5.4 update include the things in the GSD22 2.9 update or do I need to do two separate updates?

Yes it includes the latest uodates for all products that might be connected to your system.

Following the instructions, turn on all plotters, depth sounders, radar, etc., allow them to boot up and become operational, then insert the card and do the update from one plotter. If you watch the screen, you will see it searching for devices and updating them. When finished, it will show everything that was updated.
