Default question on color fishfinders

I asked this question before - in a bit different way - and didn't get any responses. Let me try aasking it another way.

I am thinking of getting a color depthfinder. What are the advantages of color over monochrome? Assuming all else is equal (pixels, programming, etc.), if I have two depthfinders and one is grayscale and the other is color, is the color depthfinder displaying information that is being lost on the grayscale? I know that there is a difference in detecting fish close to the bottom, what about suspended fish?

Thanks,
Pete

Either color or "classic" should show you suspended fish, at least if the calibration or sensitivity is dialed in right. I understand that the biggest advantage to the color sonar is to see the type of bottom. You can really tell the difference between sand, shell, or rock - much better with a color unit.
Of course, mine is B/W due to budget concerns, but when looking for fish I like to keep it on "Dual-display" where it shows the 50 and the 200 kHz views side by side. That way I see all of the fish that aren't biting.

Default RE: question on color fishfinders

I went to a color FF last year. It was a great change. Part of the improvement was due to the quality of the new vs. old FF's power and software, but I am sure that color played a big part in the overall improvement.

If you look at the same machine and compare b/w vs color, the color display is easier to see and easier to interpret. The color depth finder is not displaying information that is being lost on the grayscale, but you will be able to see and interpret the color display faster and easier.

Ditto on what Mr Pat said. Probally the best thing I did. Detecting suspened fish or finding live bottom is a breeze.

On more bonus to the color units(at least Ray-Marine's) is with polarized sunglasses on you can still see the screen,*where with*there gray scales screens*you can't. If you can swing the extra $$ I would highly suggest color.
