I had saved the maps from my 5212 to an 8gig SD as recomended and they load up fine as soon as I put it in the reader.
What is confusing me is that I have several vision chips for the great lakes, when I put in the Lake Huron, superior, ontario, all is well and the additional features are all there, however, when I load up the Lake Erie and St. clair chip, nothing changes, no additional features.
Please let me know if anyone else has issues running the HP, it works fine on my cheap laptop, only 1280 x 800 Where as my desktop is dual monitors 1680x1050..it has a very fast graphics card. But is almost totally unresponsive.
Thanks,

I'm running on a very fast Intel i7 quadcore with a high end NVIDIA graphics card on a 24" 1920x1080 display and no issues.
What graphics card do you have? I would check to see if you have the latest driver for your graphics card.
1680x1050 is an odd resolution. Are you running in dual monitor mode on the display adapter or spanned to stretch the display? If in spanned mode, have you tried changing to dual mode to see if it makes a difference? While I wouldn't expect so, its worth a try.
Do you have the latest .net version from microsoft?
got mine running today- works fine with vista - using the g2 chip out of the boat but will not using that from now on. I don't think moving a chip in an out of the boat that are expensive is the way.
Can transfer Marine Detail but not User Data-Garmin 545 version.50
Hello
I have a Garmin 545 with Sept software update (version 5.0) I can "copy" the "US marine Detail map to SD card succesfully. However I receive "database error" while trying to transfer waypoints from unit to SD card.
The Homeport software says there is an error in the "useradmin.data" when i try to import.
Any ides on why waypoint and tracks won't transfer.
I am using an empty 3gigabite SD card
Kind regards
Mark

The first thing I would have done was to try a different SD card. Try it different ways, copy the waypoints first, then the maps, the other way around, etc.
Of course, you could contact Garmin tech support for help.
BTW: SD cards are less than $10.00 for 2 GB at Walmart in the photo section.
Database Error-Message during attempt to transfer Waypoints
Hello Tom
I tried a new SD card to download waypoints and got same message on my 545..
Tom you said to try to transfer waypoints first. However, I only see one way to transfer waypoints to SD card and that is through "user data".

Garmin puts a directory structure on the card and expects everything to be in a certain place in that structure. You don't have a choice of where to put files like you would in Microsoft Word or such.
I think if you put your card in the plotter and transfer the waypoints to it, it will create that structure.
I just downloaded & installed the software and its pretty good, except I can't figure out how to copy the maps from the Garmin data card (the old proprietary ones beigh read through a Garmin USB reader) onto the hard drive. I just know that if I have to pull the chips for each fishing trip as sure as the sun rises in the east, I'll forget the cards in the computer and be severly hampered out on the water. I can't see the USB reader when I right click on the start button & go to explore, so if anyone has any other ideas, I'm listening.
Procedures for tranfering waypoints to your SD card
After your unit is turned on put your sd card into the card reader slot on your unit. A menu will appear Manage Card. Choose it when it opens select the transder to card menu. If you have v 5.1 loaded another option will appear where you can name the file (note ... if you have V5.0 or below you won't see that selection ... not an issue).
After you transfer your waypoints to your SD card go to your computer and open Homeport. After Homeport opens put you SD card in your card reader installed in your computer. When the data opens you will see it in the upper left hand corner of the Homeport display page. It will show the card as your unit ... in my case 545 etc. There will be a folder just below that named untitled (note ..... if you have V5.1 loaded on your 400/500 units and you named your file you will see that name).
This is the important step. To get Homeport to load the file (just like in MS) highlight the untitled or name file then choose the View Drop Down Menu at the top of the Homeport Display). A menu will open ... choose the send to option from the that drop down menu. It will open into a another menu asking where you want to send it to ..... choose the My Collection selection. Your waypoints will be loaded into Homeport.
To transfer data you've added in Homeport to the same thing in reverse and choose the SD card named for your unit.
There you go ............
You can't use your old Garmin Card Reader directly with Homeport. Just send the data from your Garmin Card Reader to the Garmin folder on your computer your want to uplaod into Homeport. After you've done that then follow the procedure above choosing the file that you sent to your Garmin folder on your computer.
Here's what your Homeport Display Screen will look like with your SD card is read by HP.
I am so impressed with this software and its ease of use. I never really used Map Source though I do have it. I downloaded Home Port a couple days ago and began playing around with it last night. I cant believe all the info. I copied my user info from my 4210 to a new SD disk and was amazed to see the amount of data that the chart plotter keeps. What was really impressive was being able to playback the logs from recent trips and see it on the computer with the map and relative speeds... Very impressive. Adding waypoints is a breeze as well. I also like the fact that when adding waypoints in mapsource with the SD Card installed, I dont have to save them to the card. Just remove the card and put it back in the plotter and sync the cards data back to the plotter.
I love the fact that you can creat a route and determine the amount of gas you will be using and the estimated travel time based on the boat profile and cruising speed.. That is a very cool and useful feature!!
This is probably the best $29 I have ever spent on a piece of software and being in the computer business for the last 20+ years, that speaks volumes to me!
Now I have a few lingering questions...
What is the use of the G2 Vision card in Home Port assuming that you have downloaded the built in map from the chart plotter to the SD Card. If you cant see the 3D elements or sat pictures from the Vision card, it seems useless once you have the marine detail map loaded. Is there something I am missing with the G2 Vision and Home Port?
Also, whats the best way to ogranize waypoints? Just save various points to different folders based on their location or region? Will there be different folders in the chartplotter to keep the waypoints seperate as it would appear in Home Port?
Can I change the name of the folder titled "USERDATA" on the SD Card to "SMB" for a specific bay as part of an effort to organize my waypoints or does it need to remain USERDATA?
One feature that could be very useful would be the ability to import waypoints with names and comments from a spread sheet such as excel or in a data base format such as comma delimited.. Maybe that feature exists and I just havent played with it enough. It sure would make entering a bunch of waypoints from a list much quicker and easier.
If Garmin recorded fuel usage at various speeds and RPM's and stored that data along with other user data, it could populate the boat profile data within HP automatically. Then again, that could open a real "can of worms"..
Tom (Bluewaterpirate),
Many thanks to you for your always useful videos and the wealth of infomation you provide! I always look to forward to learning something new from your posts! You da man!
When I downloaded the file, I saved it instead of Run it. After I saved it and Before I ran it, I made a cd of the file which I can now use to install on other computers, IE laptop.
I then clicked on the install file and installed it on my desktop computer.
So, if you have saved it when you downloaded, you have a copy on your computer that you can use again.
