Default Newer version of Garmin's 4XXX / 5XXX 5.3

I hope this isn't old news but...

Has anyone loaded the newer version of 5.3. I did today and it updated the GPS17 from 3.1 to 3.2 and the GSD-22 from 2.7 to 2.8.

It now shows the correct time with the GPS17 update. Not sure what the sounder update will do.

Cheers.

That's it. There was a earlier version 5.30 but I can't remember the date. Strange how they kept it as 5.30 and not call it 5.4.

At least it fixed the date/time issue that arose with the original 5.30 release.

There is NOT a "different" version of 5.3. The date on the website changed, cause some WEB programmer finally got to updating the web links. It ussually takes them 3 months to update the link on the 5215 software page, sometimes it never gets updated. But Vers 5.3 is version 5.3, which came with GSD Vers 2.80.

But, I'm wonderin where 5.4 is??

nope. 5.3 was 5.3 for the headunit, but the bundled gsd was 2.7 in the first published. i just re-downloaded 5.3 last week and updated the unit. gsd comes in at 2.8 now. ron

I have a hard time believing that Garmin or anybody would change software without changing the version number. How could they possibly troubleshoot problems if they had to wonder "old version 5.3" or "newer version 5.3"?

The changes are shown on the web page for each version. No mention of "old" or "new".

technically, 5.3 is still 5.3. it was the bundled software for the gsd that changed. gotta watch the fine print.

I downloaded and installed V 5.3 the 1st day it came out. It installed Version 2.80 on my GSD22. NOTHING has changed in it.

You may have done the upgrade with your GSD not turned on, or not booted up yet. So your GSD22 never got the 2.8 version, until you did the update a second time.

I know for 100% sure, nothing has changed in it. My 5.3 version, downloaded day one, is the EXACT same byte size and file (used a digital FILECOMPARE utility) as the 5.3 available today.

LOL. I keep hoping that this kind of thread will be a 5.4 or better yet, a 6.0 in it. :D

On a similar note, I was in 65 feet of water (The deepest she's been in so far) -- about 6 miles out) and it actually read school of fish pretty well. Still not happy with the bottom read AT ALL... but I have to say, it finds wrecks and school and larger fish above the bottom pretty well.

I love mine, no issues at all. Well, actuall one issue, the line of noise that is always present at about 20% down in any depth. Other than that, mine works perfect.

not arguing with your set of facts, but my original zip of 5.3 was 53,555.2K and the new one is 53,915.6K.

i also track the version change carefully so i know it took on all peripherals (as i said before, my 2010c had a tough time doing the bundled update, i usually had to do each piece separate). so i know the original said 2.7 and 2.7 took. they may have changed it that day.

pete, i'm really not sure what troubles you are having. i have an m260 and everything has been fine since they fixed the ranging. i do take it off of auto gain a lot since the 1k xducer seems to pick up a lot -- but the pictures are good. ron

I'm glad we got that settled.

I guess it's about time someone contacts Garmin and asks them if they change the software but leave the version number the same.

Welcome back Birdman. The Coast Guard has been out looking for you as you have been MIA.
Correct me if I am wrong, but the Garmin Rep I talked to when I had a problem with my Fishing Chart missing when I upgraded to 5.0, stated that I could go to a Website (I did not write it down) and back graded my software to regain access to the missing fishing chart. Pete, would that help you out at all or is the current problem the same as what you have been experiencing?

Actually - right now I'm not going to go back to any older version. Things are pretty stable. My next step (after the season is over) is I'm going to drain the M260 and remove the 5200 from the hull. The Airmar rep said it would be fine since it was a very thin (super thin) coat -- but I'm going to wire brush it off and make it 100% clean.

This coupled with a 5.xx update and I think things will get better (or I hope).

Well I am glad to hear you are marking some fish anyway. Are you guy's on the East Coast getting ready to Lay-Up for the season yet? We have had great weather all season long in the PNW. Really nice this week and back into the 70's next week so I am not ready to move off this rock as of yet? Sorry for getting off subject guys, just curious.

Not to thread-jack. But yeah. I was had three poles in the water for the last day of Black Bass. I would drift over the wreck, see a school on the sounder and then watch my poles bounce. The problem you find is that three poles and one man equals not enough hands. :D

The weather was so-so the last couple of weeks, but this past Sunday was great. Go over the Northeast forum on here... I've posted more there...

I should have photographed my 5012 when I did the second 5.30 update as proof. It was in black and white on the screen, GPS17 3.1 to 3.2 and GSD-22 2.7 to 2.8. Everything else remanded the same including the system 5.30.

I too uploaded 5.30 when it was first released and I know the GSD-22 was on and functioning at the time. I also tried loading it on again the next day in an effort to fix a sounder issue after this update. As 5.30 was already there it would not allow a reload.

When I discovered a second release of 5.30 I downloaded the file and my 5012 accepted this during the upload. Doing this fixed the date / time issue. Have not used the sounder yet but will do this weekend.

Birdman, what I am reporting is true and accurate. I have no reason to mislead anyone. The Airforce trusted me to maintain F-111 and F/A-18 aircraft so I do have some technical expertise and therefore believe carrying out software updates is well within my capabilities.

All the best,

Default New 5.3 made changes-read on!

So, based on what Topend says I try the update on my 5212. Here's my story .

The first day the original 5.3 update came out I installed it -lost the correct date on the tides . Eventually Blue Water Pirate post a fix [change Communication from Garmin to 0183] and the date is now fixed on the tides . Fix procedure was also listed on the Garmin site under faq but not really obvious .

So Topend says he recently downloads 5.3 and its fixes things. I say, hmm, how can that be it still says 5.3 on the Garmin site-wouldn't Garmin change the number if things were different . But, I says, what the heck how can it hurt and maybe it will help .

I download 5.3 again and compared to the old 5.3 [51Mb size] the download file is just slightly larger[51.4Mb]. Big Deal I say but I keep going. I change the communication in the 5212 back to Garmin and confirm the date is still wrong on the tides screen. I load the current 5.3 download to an SD card and install the card in the unit. Select update software after I put the card in and away it goes. So, I'm watching the update screen and I see all these old numbers going up to new numbers and I say, Wow, something is happening . Wondering, is it fixing the problem-we'll see?

So, the update ends and I bless the unit , say a few prayers and go back to the tides screen. The date still shows up wrong but, suddenly, its back to correct . Wow. pretty good. I turn the unit off and then back on. I Let it acquire all the satellite's and check the tide date again-still good-terrific.
I say, great, but I also say why the hell didn't the Garmin site just change the number of the update so I wouldn't have waited so long before I was pushed by Topend's post to give it a try. Jeez, I kept checking the Garmin site regularly to look for updates but the number never changed thus, I figured, must be no update.

So, if you are having the date problem when your 5xxx communication is set to "Garmin," give the "new" 5.3 a try-what have you got to loose and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Ahhh, the benefits of being a THT member and being able to read .

The accessory updates "ride" an update to the MFD. If there's no change to the firmware in the MFD, a change in the number would be misleading. Most of us have enough sense to read the update descriptions, so there is no secret plot going on. Is that too hard?

OldPete: there are two products that will release 5200 from relatively smooth surfaces without damage. West Marine carries one that requires hours or days of patience and multiple applications, but will eventually let the 5200 be peeled off with a fingernail. There is another debonding material that someone gave me a sample of, but its hiding in my basement. If it surrenders, I'll post the name.
