Garmin 178C User's Manual Now On-Line

Garmin usually publishes the User's Manual for a new product, on-line in PDF format, when it begins shipping. Since the one for the 178C wasn't on their website yet, I wrote their webmaster. He apologized and said that was an oversight, and the 178C manual is now on-line. It has good info on the side by side split screen, as well as the new mount.

I like to see a product hands-on, especially the display, in a store before purchasing, and like to become intimately familiar with it before the visit, so it is much more productive. On-line manuals let me do this. Perhaps this will help someone else.

I do have one question for those who've already purchased the 178C. Are the pictures in the manual in color, as they were in the 188C manual, or in greyscale as shown in the on-line version of the 178C manual? Just curious.

They're in greyscale in the manual, but there's also a 'quick guide' that has color shots of most screens.

Thanks 150Sport. I just purchased this unit and have been pleased so far, gotta have the Blue Chart with the unit to get the full effect.

Be glad to answer any questions you may have about this unit.

Thank you both for your responses. How do you find the viewing of the new LCD panel out in the sunlight? Is it bright enough? Is glare a problem? Thanks!

I had no trouble seeing it in the brightest sunlight. My 178C seems to be just as bright as my friend's 182C. The 182C has sharper contrast - probably because it has fewer colors.

I did notice that it fades quickly looking from an angle. But the mount can be quickly readjusted as necessary so its no big deal to me.

150Sport - I agree with MLauman's response. I've had no trouble in sunlight, although mine is in the electronics box. He is right about viewing from an angle, you do have to be looking almost directly at the unit, but the newer bracket with this model adjusts / swivels very easy.

I think the 188C / 182C may have a little better graphics, but not sure (for me) it's worth the price difference. True to Garmin form as with their other units, putting waypoints into a route while underway is a bit cumbersome, my old Magellan handheld is much more user friendly with this function. Otherwise, the functions and menu are easily accessible.

Only issue I've had is with reading depths less than 5 ft, however, had same issue with my Garmin 160 Blue depthfinder. I've been told to play with the gain and turn off the fishfinder function when not using the unit........haven't tried this yet, but will keep you posted.

Again, thank you both for the information.

You might also try using one or the other frequency individually, rather than both, in shallow water.
