Default Ray. E120 Fish Finder/Sounder Question/Issue

I have a fairly new Raymarine E120 system in a 32' Whaler Outrage, with a B256 1kw ducer, and went offshore this weekend looking for yellowtail. I'll start by saying I'm not a salty old expert with years of experience at offshore fishing, so my problems may be the operator, not the equipment (settings, etc.). Everything seemed to work peachy inshore, in shallower water, but when I got out to the where the deep water ridges were my screen was showing strange things! First, it seemed to be almost frozen, not scrolling. Second, and this is hard to explain, it was as if someone ran a line of paint across the top of the screen and it was dripping/streeking down the screen in sections. Third, I got no bottom depth number reading- just blinking lines where the number should have been. I changed settings numerous times- 200 to 50, preset shallow, preset deep, preset dual, etc. Nothing changed. I thought it was the sounder so I tried to reset it, and got a warning page/alarm that the DSM could not be detected. Then, when I got back inshore it all seemed to work fine! Got bottom readings, etc. Now I'm stumped! Was it me, my settings, and how I was using it, or was it actually a problem with the system. Sorry for the length, and thanks for any insights! Griff

could be two things - both with the sounder box (DSM300) -->an internal connection inside or a software upgrade needed - find a ray dealer and take it in...

I do not have a Raymarine. But mine will do the exact same thing if the water is deeper then the bottom setting. I don't leave mine on auto, so I can get bigger picture by manually setting max depth. And if I exceed my setting I get the exact same thing you describe. The are two separate max depth settings on my unit. Don't know about yours.
