Anybody try moving waypoints between mapsource and new Garmin?
Mapsource saves waypoints as a .gdb, .mps, .txt, .dxf, or .GPX. Can I just save the list in one of these fromats to a card and load in a 4210?
Thanks in advance.
Even easier. You just click the icon ("Mapsource to Device") and it copies the data for you. You don't even need to know how it does it, or what format it's in.
Maybe there is another way, but my Mapsource did not recognize the SD as a Garmin device until I had installed it in the 4210 and saved something.
If you look at the SD card after it's been in the plotter, there is a folder(directory) under the root where the data is stored.
If you download the latest update to your PC and transfer it to an SD card, this will happen automatically. Then you can use the card for route or waypoint transfers.

Sounds great ! Specially since I am considering buying mapsource.
Just begs more questions for me...
I understand the SD card process, and BWP explains that very well in his video,
Another option is that you can apparently (mapsource to device) connect your computer directly to the plotters?
Can you tell me how you physicaly do that? What type of connection is required, a cat5 cable with rj45 ends? How do the two connect? Any special cabling adapters required?
I have a 4212 and a 5212 on the garmin network, and have a 440 at the lower helm that is not on the network. If I connect my 440 to the network, will all plotters get updated simultaneously when I load waypoints or routes to any one of them, or do I have to upload them individually?
Once you buy mapsource, do you also have to buy all your maps all over again?? I have the G2 chips for the 5 great lakes and the St. Lawrence. I would have to buy 6 chips at several hundred each again, or can I use my existing chips?
A laptop seems fine inside the cabin but out on the flybridge with a lot of sun it is very difficult to read. Do they make a small netbook with a daylight screen, that would be ideal to have on the boat to do all this.
See Birdman, I told you, you should come up here for a few days for a hands on tutorial with a very appreciative student...

Would gladly come up for a weekend on the 65' Bluewater!! Pick a weekend, send me a plane ticket from JFK, LGA or Islip, and book a hotel room. See ya there!!
Leave the 440 out of the equation, and keep it as a completely independant emergency device, possibly with its own smaller battery. It is not networkable and would be stupified by additional GPS signals. The 441 has N2K and could display some of those goodies, but....
The 640 is a wonderful little unit, but doesn't bring anything new to the party. Neither of these can display radar, and I suspect that you will have to control your XM/Sirius audio from the big'uns.

Thanks,
That pretty well answers why the 440 was never put on the network. It is at the lower helm, so using it as an emergency unit Makes sense.
As for the 640, it is used on the dinghy or if we rent a car in port while cruising.

Birdman, careful what you wish for. A bit late this year, the boat is going into storage and if I had you come down now, I would probably forget everything by spring..
But we may do that in the spring...
Still looking for an answer as to mapsource connections to 5212 and if you have to buy maps for mapsource as well...

As of right now, yes, you would have to purchase maps for Mapsource (the Bluechart for your region). BUT, I've been informed that the new software supposedly replacing Mapsource very soon, will allow you to use the chart data from the plotter. So you will save the charts onto your SD card, then upload the SD card into the new software on the PC.
The the answer is yes, but no!!!
You don't need to connect the 5215 to your PC. You just use the SD card to transfer data back and fourth, its very easy and takes 2 seconds. However, I'm sure you could probably also connect them if you wanted to (maybe in your case i.e. large boat/helm, you want to leave the PC connected all the time?). In that case, you could probably connect them via a NMEA connection. But I'm not sure what that would do for you?
Thanks Birdman ! Since the new software is supposed to be out in a couple of weeks, I should wait for that then. No point in buying software and all the maps if it will be obsolete in a couple of weeks.
Thanks,
PS.
We have to stop this kumbaya stuff, people will start wondering about us...

I was just looking around on Garmin's web site and there is absoulutly no info about the new software. I wonder if they will offer an 'upgrade' price for those that have mapsource..

my guess...it will not be released until one of the shows - either ft laud (oct) or miami (feb)
and no, there will be no upgrade from what you have now - those days are over in the marine industry...for every mfr and every product....
Just a note, if you get an older copy of the Trip&Waypoint Mgr software, say version 4.0, you need to download the version 6.15.6 update. Had "send to device" issues and the update cleared it up.

Well I hope it is Ft Laud. I'd rather have the ability to play with the software all winter than wait until Feb, then have to go to the boat when it's 15 degrees out to download my maps...
