Hi guys. Did a search and found this thread. I have a new 4210 and my buddy emailed me a long list of waypoints via email attachment. I formatted the SD card in the 4210, and there is a .sml file on the card. So I assume that means the formatting worked. I did a drag-n-drop of his email attchment onto the SD card and that seemed to work. It placed a .mps file onto the SD card. I assume that's a mapsource file of the waypoints.
But when I take the SD card to the 4210, nada. It doesn't seem to recognize it, and it definitely isn't loading any waypoints onto the plotter. I do not have Mapsource software on my PC. Is that required in order for his file to work on my 4210? I assumed if I placed it on the SD card after formatting the card, that the waypoints would then transfer to the 4210 once I placed it into the chartplotter slot. But it's not working that way.
Do I need to buy Mapsource? Reading here that new software is coming out soon, I'd like to wait. If it's Lauderdale, that would work. Anything later than that, I need the waypoints. I do have my waypoints on a Furuno 1650 (keeping as a backup plotter/sounder), but sounds like a pain moving them from Furuno to Garmin. Why isn't the email attachment to SD to 4210 working for me??
The 4210 tends to use files that end in ".adm" and are in the garmin then userdata folders. Everything I've ever transfered on the SD cards is called that. Defaults to userdata.adm.
You can try placing the file in the garmin -> userdata folder, but it probably won't work. The .mps files are mapsource files only I believe. Find someone with map source and get them to transfer it for you.

Did your buddy send you data from Mapsource or from his plotter?
Mapsource is keyed to a particular (individual) plotter.
If he sent you data from his plotter, try this: Take an SD card, put it in your plotter and download some data. Now put the SD card into your PC and examine the structure of the card. There will be a folder under the root of the card and a file in that folder. It should have the same name as the file your buddy sent you. Delete your file and place his in its place. Then try uploading it to your plotter.
Still not working. I will have to ask my buddy if he sent it from the plotter or from Mapsource. I'm guessing from Mapsource, as he sent it from home and he has Mapsource at home.
I want to get Mapsource anyway, so where's the best place to buy Mapsource? I've heard others say they got it free, or at least very cheap. Or should it have came with my new 4210 unit?
Looking at the Garmin website, it says that Mapsource is included with their maps. I bought the G2 Vision card. But no Mapsource included. Is the G2 Vision SD considered a map?
Ron, I tried loading a waypoint from my 4210 to an SD card, as suggested. Input a test waypoint and then transferred it. Looked as it that worked fine. Placed it in my card reader and it was a .adm file. But my computer couldn't open it. My buddy's email sent .mps files. I can't open those either. Not sure at this point what to do. I guess I'll call Garmin tomm and ask.
Will be another week or two before I can get the boat to water anyways. But I'd sure like to see some waypoints on the plotter!

Mapsource comes (came) on a CD along with all the maps and a code to "unlock" one region (Chesapeake Bay, for instance). You could purchase additional codes to unlock additional regions. The "cards" are not the same thing.

Mapsource is not free, nor is it "very cheap", but it has been discontinued to be replaced with another program in just a couple weeks.
