No to the second part, there nothing you can do to make the screen brighter, unless you buy a Raymarine screen which I think are better at that.

Not sure if there is a cover for the Furuno unit, I'm sure somebody will help with that. But if not, it would not be that difficult to make one out of plexiglass. It bends very easily when heated. Just bend a piece to fit around the unit and stick out like a hood (a few inches), and glue or snap or screw, velcro... it on.

Birdman I was thinking about trying a piece of smoke color plexiglass to try to difuse the light on the screen.Or maybe some type of polorized material if I could find it.I guess I will have to experiment with different materials !!! !

I have a new one that has the bright screen. I can see it in any light. I've heard there is a company that you can send it to and they will make it bright. Can't remember the name but hopefully someone on this board will chime. Maybe Thom?

If they are just laying a coating of some type of plastic (and I don't care what kind or what's in it!!), FORGET IT!! If they are replacing the LCD screen on the unit with somethng else, different story.

The anti glare coating is part of it, but I'm sure they are replacing the lcd or boosting the voltage or something.

offshore3144, Birdman is wrong on this one. How old is your 1650? If it is not one of the new screen with the enhancements which I think they only started doing last year send the unit to Man-Machine in Md. and your unit will be 60-70% easier to read in sunlight, I know because I had it done to my first 1850 I had 3 years ago. Their new units are easy to see in sunlight because they started doing their own screen enhancements. Sorry Birdman I am not picking on you I just know what I am talking about from experience from using Man-Machine.

Offshore3144, Man-Machine definatly can help you with your problem. In fact 2002 is when I bought my first 1850 which I had trouble reading and the dealer I bought it from told me to send it to them and if I was not satisfied he would pay for having it done, that was a good guarantee and it was well worth it. Just call Man-Machine and tell them what you have and they will help you out.

Grady, I was just going to bring up this same problem-I have the same unit and can only see it dead on from a straight angle on sunny days. It sucks if you're not right in front of it! So,I made an on dash box with a 4 sided-3 inch extension, with tinted glass face that's removable. Seems excessive, but can't see any solution. Haven't tried it out yet- keeping fingers crossed. Just got the unit 1 yr ago, so hate to switch, loose $, etc. Is there even a color ff out there that's readable in sun?

endorfin, as far as not being able to see the unit from an angle, part of that is the LCD screen. I cannot read any of my units well from a hard angle. A slight angle is fine though. I have a Lowrance X-19ct color FF and gps combo unit also and can see that fine in the sunlight.

Hey, no sweat. I didn't say it couldn't be done or NOT to do it. I said "If they are JUST laying a coating of something on the current screen, forget it!!!" And that still stands.

If as also mentioned they are replacing the screen, or doing something else, then fine.
