I've been installing a Garmin 4212 on my new boat. Everything has been pretty smooth, but the install instructions aren't super clear. The box comes with a lot of wires, and I think the install instructions could have been written a lot clearer.
When wiring the 4212, it comes with a yellow wire that seems to wire power to the "network", they suggest this be on a switch. I bought a simple toggle switch and put it inline off the hot wire. Is this enough??
On the gsd 22, the instructions aren't much better. As far as suppling power to the unit, It comes with a wire with 1 plug and the other end has about 10 wires coming out. I just used the red and black and wired through the same switch as above. Is that ok??
Can someone explain why Garmin suggests this switch??
If the weather is good tomorrow, I am going to install the m260 ducer. Any suggestions, I planned on using 5200 for the install. Any suggestions before I start??
the yellow cable is for power to the nmea 2k network. you want to be able to power down when you add or remove a peripheral.
the red and black are the power leads for the gsd 22, the other wires are for CANet. you should be using the garmin network cable to join the 4212 and the gsd.
as long as the switch is rated for the combined draw, probably not an issue.
if you use 5200 to mount the tank, the instructions for the new tanks indicate not to use mineral oil as a medium. i had my yard install my tank (can't hang upside down for that long a time anymore) and we debated what to use. they have been using ge siliicone II with good results. they cleared the gel coat off of the area where the tank goes and used the caulk (alot of it). holding up pretty well. you will get more info on this from others on the board. i decided that this was a pretty clean way to go and if it did pop, we would go the more difficult route later. ron

I thought the directions were very straight forward though I made it a point to read through them a couple times before I installed my Garmin boat candy.
Red goes to the boats fused 12v positive. Black goes to the boat ground. The yellow cable that goes to the NMEA 2000 T's can have the positive connection run off a switch if you want to be able to shut the NMEA 2000 network off. Its draw is pretty minimal. I ran mine to the fused 12v as my boat is kept at home and has on board chargers and switches to shut the batteries power off if I choose. Any other switched 12v + should be run off the 12v switched on from the key switch.
Do a search on here. The wiring of the 42xx and the GSD can be a little tricky -- the manual is NOT that easy to understand, and it makes it seem like you need to wire up more than you do.
Just read and search on here like mad -- IIRC (when I did mine - same setup) -- there is everything you need on this forum to sort it out.
There are a lot of wires because the units are interchangable with so many different models and components.
The 4212 and the GSD22 are wired via tha Garmin Network. All the other wires in that stack are for the CANnet which is used for other garmin head units.
I have all my RED power wires connected to a power bus in my hardtop and this bus is switched on a main shutoff.
I posted a wire diagram on tht in one of the 4212 threads. I did a search but couldn't find it.
