Default Remote mic location

I currently have a Uniden Oceanus that is my primary VHF. I have it mounted in a t-top e-box and would like to move the mic location to a surface on my console. I know it would be a piece of cake with a radio that has a screw on mic connection, but my Oceanus seems to have a non removable mic. If I cut the mic off of the factory wiring and install a bulkhead fitting on the console and proper fittings to match, would it be hard? I am fairly handy at stuff like that. I would need a schematic for the wiring, but I could probably get that from Uniden. Would a new radio with built in remote mic be the way to go? My current unit talks fine and I really hate to remove it to relocate a mic. Any suggestions?

Default RE: Remote mic location

Hey that's what I have, so far so good.

Yes, you can probably cut and splice that handset cord but there's no guarantee on the signal quality or maintaining water resistance.

Last week, I think it was West Marine had a couple good DSC units on clearance including a Standard Horizon with remote mic capabilities for the $150 range (no antenna included). You might want to look into something like that.

Good luck!
