charger hook up question (perko question too)

I noticed something about the "Readi amp 8 automatic battery charger" that came with a used 1995 boat I purchased.

It has 2 orange wires and 1 black wire coming from it. He had to extend the wires (he moved the battery location) and he extended the black wire with another black wire and used 2 whites to extend the orange ones.

Here's where I'm puzzled.

He has the black wire going to the negative terminal on batt 2 (deep cycle) one white wire going to the positive terminal on batt 1 (cranking)...................and the other white going no where.

Shouldn't this other (un-used) white wire be going to the positive terminal on batt 2 (deep cycle)? With his present system is batt 2 getting charged? Is there something I should be doing with my perko switch?

Should Perko switch be in "OFF" position when charger flipped on while using shore power?
