Can I use an old VHF antenna for FM radio provided I change the connector?

Yes, and it will probably work just fine, won't hurt a thing.

My boat only has the little 24" wire antenna coming out of the back of the radio and I get reception 30 miles out. You might check that before doing a lengthy install....PM
